Itinerary
Lake Ashinoko (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko) was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after the volcano's last eruption 3000 years ago. Today, the lake with Mount Fuji in the background is the symbol of Hakone. Hakone Sightseeing Boats are operating pirates boats between Moto-Hakone at the lake's southern shores and Togendai at the lake's northern end. A boat cruise from one end of the lake to the other takes roughly 30 minutes and costs 1,200 yen.
If you take a glance over the vast, dreary piece of land, you’ll notice a white pillar of smoke rising from the bare surface of the mountain… Owakudani is one of most famous viewpoints in Hakone, where you can observe the intense volcanic activity from up close. It is said that this place came to be thanks to a phreatic eruption and pyroclastic flow that occurred almost 3000 years ago. The peculiar sulfur smell that spreads throughout the area was the reason behind its second name from the past, Jigokudani (Hell Valley). One of the local specialties is the “black eggs”, whose main trait is in the shells that turn black due to a chemical reaction with geothermal energy and volcanic gas. Head to this unique site using the ropeway, and enjoy a nice view of Hakone and Mt. Fuji along the way. We get on cable car from Togendai where we get off the pirates boat. Cable car costs ¥1,200.
Mt. Fuji World Cultural Heritage Site Asset (registered in June 2013) revered as the "spring of the gods" since long ago, many legends have been told about this site. There are eight springs at Oshino Hakkai Springs. At one time, what we now know as Oshino-mura used to be a lake. Mt. Fuji erupted many times, gradually filling the space between Fujisusono and Mt. Misaka.
We drive up to the highest spot where we can with vehicle. We can see the top of Mt.Fuji up-close.

Visiting Mount Fuji is part of the must-do visits when travelling around Japan and it was an immense privilege to have reached the 4th station @2020m in the year of the 2020 Olympics. The discovery of the Akashi/Ashinoko Lakes on a pirate boat and the volcanic area as well as the black egg was an unforgettable experience. Japan has very multi-faceted sceneries, from mountainous landscapes to sandy beaches, from forests to volcanic areas. Visiting these different areas is important for international visitors so as to understand more Japan. Our driver, Take is a very friendly and helpful person who has made our dream to catch a glimpse/to have a full view of the Mount Fuji come true during our trip to Japan. He also drove us to the Jigokudani Yaen Kōen Park to discover the snow monkeys and to the Karuizawa outlet mall for a shopping session. Our warmest thanks to Take for having safely taken us to these wonderful places and made memorable and precious photos for us.
Hi, Lyra-san and Mantra-san. We were very lucky. Because it was a sunny day. Basically, Mt. Fuji is shy, so she doesn't like to show herself to the public. But the day we visited her was really fine day. I believe that the bless was attributed to the good-doings that you two are behaving every day. And the lamen, or chinese noodles on our lunch was also good.
Guide Mt. Shishiba is a very professional guide. Even though we couldn’t see the Mt. Fuji due to very cloudy weather, he took us to the old Japanese village, traditional market, Hakone, and old Shrines etc. We are very satisfied with his excellent job! Thanks Mr. Shishiba san !
Good morning, Jung san, Young san, Susan san, and Kyung san. How is cruise travel ? It should be comfortable. Thank you so much for your heart-warming review. Unfortunately though it hit the big typhoon while you were staying, the wonderful four sisters know how to have a good time very well. And I'm proud of taking them here and there in Japan. I really hope to meet you all again. Sincerely, Shishiba
