What travelers say
Our summary of the 100 most recent reviews out of 6,181 (Sep 2026 – Oct 2026), collected by Viator and Tripadvisor.
Nearly every reviewer credits the guide with turning a free-to-enter memorial into something they could actually understand, delivered with care for a painful subject. The one repeated drawback is too little time afterwards to explore the museum alone.
What travelers love
Guides with deep historical context77 of 100 reviews
Most reviewers stress how much the guide knew, explaining daily life in the camp, how it fit into the wider Nazi system and why events unfolded. Jake and Iain are the names mentioned most.
Respectful tone, right balance21 of 100 reviews
About a fifth praise how guides handled the weight of the place: reverent at the memorial, warning before graphic images, yet with enough warmth or humor that the day did not feel crushing.
Smooth trip by train and bus20 of 100 reviews
Around a fifth note that the guide kept the group together on public transport, explained each connection in advance and made the journey feel easy.
Patient with questions12 of 100 reviews
A good number mention guides inviting and fully answering questions, often with a balanced, non-political view.
Where it falls short
Little free time on site8 of 100 reviews
Under one in ten felt the free time after the guided part was too short to see the museum or linger in buildings, and a couple of groups were rushed after transport delays.
Best for
Travelers interested in WWII and Holocaust history
Independent travelers who want context, not just exhibits
Visitors without a car staying in Munich
Maybe not for
Families with young children
Visitors wanting hours alone in the museum
Anyone wanting a private coach rather than public transport
Tips from past travelers
Pick an early departure if you can; one group saw large crowds arriving as they finished.
If Munich transit is new to you, take a taxi to the meeting office so you arrive on time.
Expect long stretches on your feet on concrete, so wear supportive shoes.
If the museum matters to you, ask whether you can stay on and return to Munich independently.
How we make this: we read the most recent reviews and sum up what travelers say again and again, good and bad. It is our summary, not a review; the reviews themselves are further down this page. Updated Oct 2026.

Our guide Keith was very...
Our guide Keith was very informative, he gave a balanced view of what we were seeing. He often had personal stories that made the tour very interesting. He kept a good pace and we covered everything in good time.
For this trip we met at the office of the tour company, took a metro to Dachau and from there took a bus to the place.

Tour with Expert Guide
Excellent tour — well organized and easy to meetup with group as we travelled from Munich to Dachau. Tour guide — Jamie — was expert in the causes of Hitler’s rise to power, how the SS turned judicial imprisonment into extra-Judicial torture and execution, and why the German people were surprisingly amendable to enabling it.

Very moving
An important visit. Having visited Auschwitz we knew what to expect as it were. Our guide was excellent. Always exceptionally moving to visit these historical places of horror.

Mark was one of the best guides we’ve had in our experience over many years of travel. The entire tour was top notch and Mark made it even better.

A 10/10 Must Do While in Munich
Scott was our guide for our day trip to Dachas. He was so knowledgeable and provided us with tons of information regarding the harsh realities of what the everyday lives were like for the prisoners of Dachau. Truly an eye opening experience that I’d recommend to anyone.

Necessary
It was a rather emotional experience, but necessary. The guide we had really explained the history of this concentration camp very well to us; it was very touching.

Poor guide
Our train was delayed in its arrival. Our guide did nothing to shorten her long winded commentary about the camp. We had no free time to go to the places she recommended we see on our journey out of the camp. She did not give us any extra time to compensate. We arrived at our departure destination and waited a long time; we could have been in the camp. We missed the train and arrived back in Munich over an hour later than our itinerary. It was a very disappointing tour.
Operator response
Unfortunatelly it (rarely) happens, that the trains have a delay, which of course disturbs the tour.
And we can not just stay at the Memorial longer than planed as other guests or guides have plans (or train conections to reach) afterwards.
The tour should give you a insight to the Memorial. Sometimes guests stay longer at the Memorial instead of traveling back to Munich with the group - that is possible in some cases if you speak to the guide.
