Great experience, highly recommended!

A great experience! We were lucky with the weather and also the sea was relatively calm. Les Calanques sont magnifiques ! Of course you should be reasonably fit, because the tour is quite strenuous, muscle soreness guaranteed the next day. But it's worth it!

Beautiful kayaking

Super good guide, who had really good local knowledge and was good at communicating knowledge. The equipment was fine and the landscape really beautiful.

Operator response

Tusind tak for din flotte anmeldelse! Venlige hilsner, Expenature

A great outing with Olivier, the kayak boss!

We had a great time with our guide. In just three hours, he made us discover a long super varied course: coves, beautiful landscapes, small swimming breaks... He was super friendly and pro. There were only two of us, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Great outing, thank you again Olivier!

Disgraceful company

My partner already wrote a review on our horrible experience but your companies response only further confirms exactly our problem. You have replied to her review reinforcing all the reasons you believe what we experienced was considered good for a 3 hour tour. Her review was to reinforce the overpriced nature and poorly described activity. The activity listing specifically said swimming stops and if it’s forbidden to swim why was I not told this when I asked to swim (when I asked to swim simply off the side of my kayak in the water), why were we told it was because of time, additionally if it’s forbidden why do full day tours do it. Secondly how can you justify advertising it as a 3 hour tour if like you state in your review, you believe the first hour should be for carrying the kayaks to the water and the third hour to carry them back. First of all it is completely unethical to advertise a 3 hour tour where over half of the tour you expect guests to literally do manual labour for you. Secondly the carrying of the kayak took me and my partner about a total of 5 minutes to carry up which was apparently the harder part. The inability for you to recognise the inadequacy of not only the tour itself but your response is incredibly disappointing. We understood why you may have chosen to wait but thought that would result in us receiving the respect of a refund when we indicate we felt this significantly impacted our experience. Ultimately I sincerely hope you either reassess your tour schedules and listing descriptions and price, or that our review deter people from booking because currently this is seriously false advertising.

Operator response

Hi there, We've read your second review carefully for the same booking, and we're genuinely sorry that you’ve walked away with such a negative impression of your experience — especially considering you told us at the end that you were satisfied and shared plenty of laughs with the group throughout the activity. That said, your message contains several inaccuracies we feel it's important to clarify, for the sake of transparency with future travellers. Regarding swimming: Swimming is possible for sure only on full-day tours, as it allows more time for a proper break to be sure to propose it. When you asked about swimming, your guide chose instead to take you see more into the Calanques to maximise your time exploring — which most guests really appreciate. Of course, you're always free to swim before or after the tour ! Regarding the duration of the activity: This is clearly listed as a 3-hour experience, including equipment handover, access walk (portage), safety briefing and time on the water. This is detailed at booking and again when you arrive. Portage is part of the nature-based activity and absolutely not “unpaid labour”, but simply a normal part of accessing an unspoilt natural area — especially when you're in your early twenties and fully capable. The Calanques are wild and beautiful, but they do require a bit of effort to reach. If this isn't to your liking, we also run departures from La Ciotat, with almost no portage. About the price: You actually experienced the full scope of what can be explored in a half-day, using real sea kayaks, and enjoyed exceptionally calm sea conditions. The value of the experience reflects that and we finished 30' later to be able to see it all ! About the wait at the start: We completely understand that waiting can be frustrating. That said, in the spirit of group fairness — especially while on holiday — we chose to wait for a couple who were struggling to find the meeting point. We stayed in contact and guided them in despite difficult reception. It was a collective effort, not passive downtime, and during that time you saw all paddle demonstration and equipment and kayaks where already down so no portage to start and economize yourself. And finally, regarding your tone: We're always open to constructive feedback. But the accusatory and condescending tone of your message is inappropriate. Our team has spent the last 25 years delivering respectful, nature-conscious experiences to thousands of happy participants. To label our work as “unethical” or “false advertising” is simply unfair and offensive — especially when you clearly told us that the tour matched your expectation and that you had a good time, shared jokes with the group, and gave no indication of being upset until your refund request was denied. Let’s be honest — at 21, it’s easy to lash out online when something doesn’t go your way. But that doesn’t make it right. We're still open to a calm and respectful conversation if you'd like to discuss things further. In the meantime, we wish you all the best for the rest of your trip in France — may it bring you better memories and meaningful discoveries. The Expénature Team

Not all skill levels

Overall this trip takes you to absolutely stunning Calanques. However, it is NOT suited for all skill levels. You begin with taking the kayak you are using to dock area (which was very rocky and difficult to do). The beginning of kayaking was smooth. Once we got to open waters it was very wavy and strenuous to paddle. Stopped in a beautiful cave, went to Calanque en Vue. Had lunch there and about an hr break. (Absolutely breath taking). After stop addle back through some pretty high waves. Once arrived at dock we had to bring Kayak up hill which was rocky as well. I highly recommend this tour would add another tour guide. Also suggest the tour guide bring at least a bottle of water for passengers.

Beautiful trip!

This was a beautiful kayaking trip through the Calanques. Definitely bring your water and sunscreen, as well as water shoes. Our guide was very helpful instructing us how to get in and out comfortably. We got quite lost initially trying to find the meeting point but our guide and group waited for us, which was much appreciated.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your kind review! We’re so glad you enjoyed this beautiful sea kayaking trip through the Calanques of Provence with Expenature. Exploring the Calanques near La Ciotat and Cassis by canoë-kayak is truly a unique way to discover the natural beauty of the Mediterranean coast in the Bouches-du-Rhône region. We’re happy to hear our guide made you feel comfortable, especially with the kayaking techniques and getting in and out of the boat. And no worries about getting a bit lost — we’re always happy to wait when possible so that everyone can enjoy the adventure together. Thanks also for the helpful tips you’re sharing with future guests — water, sunscreen and water shoes are definitely must-haves! We hope to see you again soon for another kayak adventure in Provence 🌊🛶 Warm regards, The Expenature

VERY DISAPPOINTING

DO NOT BOOK THIS!!! We were so excited for this tour but we’re so terribly disappointed. First we arrived before the allocated time of 3:50pm (it stated that if you were to arrive after 3:50 your spot would be forfeited) however two other participants did not arrive on time. Rather than starting the tour without them we waited nearly over 70minutes for these people to arrive. 70minutes standing in the hot sun. In the end we were kayaking for under 90minutes. During this time we were not allowed to swim (as we apparently didnt have time), this was extremely disappointing given the 70minutes we stood waiting in the sun. Swimming in the calanaques was something I was so looking forward to and have now not been able to do. Overall for a 3hour half day tour we got less than half of the activity. This was extremely disappointing however we had hoped that we would be able to get some sort of refund from the activity provider considering we missed out on so much. The response from the activity provider that what we experienced was considered the best expected tour possible for this activity. If our experience is considered the best possible experience the activity description needs to be drastically changed and the price must be changed accordingly to reflect the actual activity. Overall the attitude from the activity provider was horrendous and we would not recommend this activity to anyone.

Operator response

Hello, Thank you for taking time to share your feedback. We're truly sorry that your experience didn't meet your expectations. ⏳ It's true that there was a wait at the beginning of the activity, and we understand how that could have been frustrating. However, we'd like to remind you that if you had been the ones running late, you would likely have appreciated us waiting — especially while on vacation, in a location that can be tricky to find despite our directions and communication. 📱 During the wait, a member of our team remained in contact with the latecomers — despite difficult connectivity — to guide them and try to keep the group together. So it wasn’t a passive wait, but a genuine effort to accommodate everyone. 🌞 We understand that waiting in the sun isn’t ideal, but we always do our best to make sure everyone has a great experience, grounded in respect and solidarity. We're truly sorry for the lack of empathy expressed toward those who were also looking forward to the activity. 🚣 Regarding the activity itself: the time on water was fully respected, and since your kayaks were already ahead, we were able to conserve your energy and offset the portage time by having you wait for the others. No one was penalized — the full half-day route was completed. Swimming isn't allowed during half-day outings due to the prohibition of landing in the Calanques National Park; this is only possible during full-day trips. Lastly, please know that all of our activities are led by passionate professionals who are committed to sharing the beauty of nature with care and respect. We take your comments seriously, but it does sadden us to see negative feedback shared across multiple platforms, especially as the spirit of our excursions is all about sharing, kindness, and collective flexibility. We're happy to discuss things further if you'd like. ☀️ The Expénature Team

Beautiful views and an incredible place to swim in En-Vau Calanque

Absolutely incredible experience. Raphaelle did a great job guiding the group and occasionally sharing facts about the history and marine biology of the Les Calanques Park. The distance we covered in the kayak was a great workout, but not overly strenuous, and the views were great, especially of the Blue Cave and of En-Vau Calanque. By far my favorite part was the lunch break of about an hour we spent in En-Vau swimming and relaxing. Incredibly beautiful scenery and I can't wait to go back!

Cassis romantic fishing village

Lovely romantic old fishing village with fabulous hikes and ocean views, crystal clear water. Easy to rent small boat or hike to Calanques. Fabulous market food, textiles, jewelry on Wednesday and Sunday. But, overly crowded and impossible to get terrace seating or reservation on weekends or in July and August. Beaches packed like sardines. Dress well and be dapper because this place has high standards. No walking around with bikini's and top less chests allowed.
