Capuchin Crypts Tour with Dark History Walk (Small Group)

Description
Visit Rome’s Capuchin Crypts, decorated with the bones of more than 3,700 monks. Skulls form wall patterns, vertebrae become chandeliers, and entire rooms serve as a striking meditation on mortality. Before entering, your guide explains why the Capuchins created this extraordinary display and how to understand the symbolism behind the bone arrangements. Inside, you’ll explore with the venue’s required audio guide, while your guide remains available for the questions that inevitably arise when you’re standing beneath someone’s spine. Most tours end at the crypt. We don’t. Afterwards, continue through Rome’s historic centre to uncover darker stories hidden behind the city’s elegant monuments - ghosts with good timing at the Trevi Fountain, culinary scandals worthy of Sweeney Todd, and a woman's hand that was just too beautiful to stay hidden away after her death. Small groups of fifteen people keep the experience intimate and easy to hear every disturbing detail.

Very interesting walking tour, learning unique vignettes about portions of Rome after seeing the Capuchin monks museum and crypts. Our guide was Ariel, who was a great storyteller and friendly guide. If you aren’t familiar with central Rome, the walking tour hit a few of the key highlights to give a general orientation of the city. Since we had to do the audio-guided tour of the museum and crypts, it might be worth doing that portion on your own, and separately book one of the group’s ghost/dark walking tours instead. More fun time with the guide and her storytelling that way!
Thank you, David. We’re glad you enjoyed the evening with Arielle. The crypts do now require the museum’s own audio guide, which does limit how much of that portion we can lead directly. That’s also why the dark history walk exists, to give guests the live storytelling, stranger details, and Rome’s less respectable side out in the city itself. We appreciate the thoughtful feedback.
Ben was a great tour guide. The stories he shared are not ones you would learn by walking around on your own or taking a traditional tour. The crypt was interesting and the tour to other landmarks was wonderful.
Thank you, Lindsey. We’re delighted you enjoyed the Capuchin Crypts Tour with Dark History Walk with Ben. Traditional tours do tend to behave themselves a bit too much, so we’re glad this one gave you the stranger, darker version of Rome instead. Very pleased the crypt and the walk through the city both landed so well.
This was a great tour especially if you love the strange and crime. The crypts can be a bit scary but you get a lot of history and the mystery of the unknown. Alethea was my guide; she was professional, funny, kind and knowledgeable about the area, history and made the facts come alive. I would recommend this tour with her and rebook.
Thank you so much. We’re so glad you enjoyed the tour with Alethea. The crypts do have a certain talent for making people feel both curious and slightly unwell, which we take as part of their charm. Delighted the mix of strangeness, crime, history, and mystery landed well, and that Alethea made it all come alive properly.
Ben was a great guide. The group was small, which made the experience more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it to experience Rome differently.
Thank you, Esther. We’re delighted you enjoyed Capuchin Crypts Tour with Dark History Walk with Ben. Small groups do make it easier to appreciate Rome’s less respectable side properly, without being herded about like penitents. Very glad it gave you a different view of the city, and thank you for the recommendation.
Awesome experience, first to visit the Capuchin's cript, that gives you an extrange sensation of calm but chills at the same time. Then, the guide let us to some places and told us some obscure historys about Rome, it was a great experience. Besides, the guide, Alethea, tells the stories in such a way that you could vizualize it at the moment.
Thank you, Tom! We’re so glad you enjoyed the experience with Alethea. The Capuchin Crypt does have that unnerving talent for feeling peaceful and deeply unsettling at exactly the same time, which is really quite efficient of it. Delighted the stories brought Rome’s darker history vividly to life for you. The city does give us plenty to work with.
Alethea was great, we really enjoyed her humorous spin on everything and her energetic personality. A little bummed she wasn't able to join us in the actual crypts but I felt like she adequately prepared us for the experience. It was also a great way to get a hang out navigating Rome.
Dark history lovers are very much our people! We’re so glad you enjoyed the tour with Alethea - her energy and humour tend to echo long after the bones do. You’re absolutely right: guides aren’t permitted inside the crypts themselves anymore, but preparing you properly (mentally and historically) is half the ritual. And if it also helped you get your bearings around Rome at night, that’s a dark little bonus. Thanks for joining us among the macabre!
Great tour with Ben. Really enjoyed it lots of information we’d never have found on our own. Definitely recommend!
Thanks for stepping into Rome’s darker corners with us. We’re glad you enjoyed uncovering stories you’d never stumble across alone - that’s exactly why we keep groups small and stories sharp. Ben will be pleased to hear it made the experience memorable. Come back anytime… there’s always more lurking beneath the surface.
A unique tour- seeing the crypts and then some of the darker stories from the area was a lot of fun. Great guide as well! Thank you to our guide!
Thank you, Allen! We’re thrilled you enjoyed wandering through Rome’s darker corners, from sacred bones to scandalous stories. The Capuchin Crypts & Dark Centre Tour is one of our favourites too: a perfect mix of history, mystery, and mild existential dread. Hope the spirits behaved themselves that night!
This tour was great for lovers of the spooky and macabre side of things! The Capuchin Crypts were wild and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Our guide (a lovely Canadian woman) was kind, professional, and so knowledgeable. After the Capuchin museum and crypts we strolled about hitting some not so known spots and learned about some dark historical moments that was very interesting!
Thank you, Amanda! We’re thrilled you enjoyed delving into the spooky side of Rome with Alethea - she makes the macabre feel downright charming. The Capuchin Crypts are certainly a sight to die for, and the dark stories that follow make it a night to remember (and maybe not sleep too soundly after).
First, I’m a solo traveler, and also the only one on this particular tour. I so appreciate that the tour went forward and my guide, Ariel, gave me the best attention, filled with facts as well as her own valuable personal insights. The displays were moving and so otherworldly. I also got to see a lot of other sites in Rome, much to my surprise; who knew they were linked with other dark secrets of this ancient capital? The evening was exhilarating, informative, and very different from any other tour of Rome. A must see.
Thank you, Kathleen! We’re thrilled you got a private audience with both Arielle and the skeletons. The Capuchin Crypts are haunting enough, but pairing them with Rome’s hidden dark corners makes for a night you won’t forget. Solo or not, the ghosts always show up in numbers - glad they kept you company!
