This was a wonderful food tour. We tried a wide variety of cuisines and our guide was very knowledgeable. Once again Culinary Backstreets is the best.

At first glance, Thessaloniki can seem to tell the single story of a bustling modern Greek city. Step into the markets, though, and another city – and narrative – begins to appear. Traces of its Ottoman past remain in the street plan, the memory of Sephardic Jewish commercial life still shapes the old market grid, and the food carries the marks of Asia Minor, the Balkans, Pontus, and the Caucasus.

This was a wonderful food tour. We tried a wide variety of cuisines and our guide was very knowledgeable. Once again Culinary Backstreets is the best.
I am never disappointed by Culinary Backstreets. Ioannis was an excellent guide. The food was delicious. And we received some great recommendations for meals later in our stay in Thessaloniki.
The trip was a perfect length with lots of short stops and longer sits in restaurants along the way. It was really interesting to try different foods. The bougatsa was so incredible and 4 different options to try; meat, cheese, spinach and sweet versions. There was only 4 on the trip and it worked really well, we saw lots of bigger groups 15+ but there is no comparison to the culinary backstreets more intimate tours. Good price for the experience.
Thank you for the wonderful review and for supporting the unsung heroes of Thessaloniki's kitchens. We love keeping our groups small and intimate so we can truly connect with the families who have been preserving these incredible culinary traditions, like the masters making that delicious bougatsa. We knew we had chosen the best food tour during our first merchant visit! Our guide (Dora) was the perfect balance of friendly and informative, without being overbearing... and her knowledge of the cuisine and relationships with the independent merchants was obvious throughout the tour. In the end, this food tour was our favorite memory of our time in Thessaloniki, and one of our best memories of Greece. Thank you Dora!

A lovely tour of Thessaloniki, both with food and sights. Our guide, Eirini was so kind and knowledgeable about the area. Our group was small so we were able to engage with her and the others easily.

Eirini was professional, kind, gracious and had many choices of foods to try. She was likeable and engaging and added some historical information but balanced that well with the food samplings. Virtually all of the places we went we would have never found on our own. The food samplings were outstanding from pastries, cheeses, olives, sweets, meats, fish, Greek coffee, etc. We appreciated her local knowledge. While it was a long tour we enjoyed every minute of it!

We received this food tour as a gift from some friends and could not have had a better time. We lucked out and it ended up being only my wife and I on the tour so we got a very personalized experience. Irene was wonderful, very knowledgeable and friendly. We had such a good time being shown around the city and she also offered to take several pictures of us. All the food along the way was delicious and we were so full when it was over! Seriously there was so much food it bordered on too much, but paired with the walk through the city it worked out perfectly. We recently relocated to Thessaloniki, so having someone who was familiar with the area show us some genuine hidden gems was awesome. We have a list of several places we cant wait to go back to, and are looking forward to our friends who purchased the tickets for us coming to visit so we can take them on this tour with Culinary Backstreets too!

A brilliant and delicious introduction to Thessaloniki's food culture and how it has been shaped by centuries of migration and multiculturalism. Dora is a lovely and intelligent guide who understands the nuances of her city and will take you to some truly local haunts you would never find on your own. This is a city with a huge appetite and this tour takes you straight to the belly of the beast!

Another fabulous Culinary Backstreets experience with a true local foodie. Ioannis is so entrenched in the food scene in Thessaloniki that every stop was a beautiful story not to mention a delicious moment. In addition to being a lover of the architecture of the city - a perfect combination for me!
