Description

Step back more than 500 years and explore the rich — and often overlooked — history of African ancestry in Panama. This walking journey unfolds through two defining chapters: the colonial era, marked by the harsh realities of slavery and powerful acts of resistance, and the West Indian migrations — a period of labor, resilience, and cultural legacy that helped shape Panama’s identity. • Our walk begins in Casco Antiguo, moving beyond the former walls that once divided the elite from the working-class community of Santa Ana. • We continue along Central Avenue, a vibrant area filled with stories and local life. • Then we visit the Afro-Antillean Museum to explore the lives and contributions of West Indian migrants who helped build the nation. Optional: Lunch at San Felipe Neri Market for local comfort food and a refreshing natural juice. Book the Walking Experience + Lunch option. This experience invites you to discover the shadows and lights that shape Afro-Panamanian heritage.

Great tour experience for those interested in Afro-Panamanian heritage

This was an exceptional tour experience. It was almost exactly what we hoped it would be--an opportunity to hear more about the Afro-Panamanian identity and culture. The owner of the business is very gracious with her time, very considerate of her guests, and very knowledgeable with the heritage. Her passion for this business and for cultural awareness is clearly evident. My wife is a Panamanian-American but some of the cultural history was never taught to her. So, it was a joy having this experience with my wife and adult daughter who is very interested in her cultural heritage. This business has earned a 5-star rating for a valid reason. Must see!

Excellent Tour and a Delicious Treat!

Meli and Gabriel provided an excellent tour that started with a historical context of Afro Panamanians, continued to Santa Ana Plaza and down Central Avenue, and concluded at the Museum. The plantation tart was delicious and I wanted to have another and I was grateful for the cold water. The postcard was unexpected and definitely appreciated. I am grateful Meli saw a need for this tour to provide another perspective. I enjoyed the entire tour and would highly recommend.

Fun, light, entertaining and interesting tour that all will enjoy

Mali the tour guide is amazing. This tour was so much fun. Be ready for tasty treats, a bit of live entertainment and salient experiences that you will have walking the streets, listening to history and viewing the community that over the next few decades will look quite different. It is more than just an Afro-Panamanian tour/ it is a visit to the past that illustrates how it made our present. You will learn a lot of historical gems through the great orator that is Meli. You walk but it is not too much. Even young children would not mind. Mobile older people would be ok too as there is not too much elevation change. There are plenty of built in moments to rest - in shade. If you also choose do lunch, the location of food, la fonda, has great options. Even a little for a non animal eating people. In that market, the juice labeled 'nance' is a reason alone to return. This tour conveys the origin and deeply seated roots of Panamanian people. It details the rich and full context of events in history. Panama embodies the spirit of what is Pan African. Booking this local tour is also a great chance to help you give back to the community you chose to visit. *All* people will enjoy this tour. *We* loved this tour obna

A Must Do Tour For All Blacks and People of Color

This walking tour was a fantastic experience and insightful adventure into the history, culture, and contributions of African and Afro-Panamanians. The tour guides Meli and Gabriel were knowledgeable and compassionate about their Panamanian heritage and the Black culture overall. My wife and I got a chance to participate in a cultural dance demonstration and walk the streets of old Panama, and feel the vibe of street markets and everyday day life in Panama. We highly recommend this tour for any Black person or person of color, regardless of where in the world you from. Because what you will discover is that our ancestry roots are more closely linked than you may realize.

Excellent!

The tour provided an in depth look at the Afro Caribbean/Antillean contributions to the country and more importantly the construction of the Canal. Meli ( and Gabriel) were GREAT! This truly was a positive experience rich in history!

Very Good Afro Panama Tour

The Tour Guides - Meli & Gabriel - are wonderful people. The Good parts: The Tour provided information and insights from a perspective you would otherwise miss. Meli is an ambassador for Panama City, she knows people and people know her. What you get feels exclusive and it is personal & passionate. Book the Tour + Lunch at the Fonda in Mercado San Felipe. The jugos and meals was outstanding and the time to chat with Meli and Gabriel was priceless. What You Should Know: It is hot & humid in Panama. Water was provided at the start of the tour. We stayed outside - in the shade for some of the time - for 150+ mins - with stops - until we got to the museum. There is limited seating in the museum and you will want to sit down. It is one of the newer tours so it will get better. The Areas for Growth: more seating at the museum, add a short walk through an establishment with air conditioning for a cooling refresh, have cold water waiting at the second location, publish and sell the book or e-book (your soundtrack gives it value: the words and images mean nothing without Meli or Gabriel) or some version focus on timing and the heat.
