Generals and Generalities

Itinerary

30 min

During the war, Robert E. Lee spent time in Savannah, and legend has it he once walked the very grounds where this hotel now stands. As you sip locally crafted cocktails, you'll hear stories of Lee’s presence in Savannah, the city's complex Civil War legacy, and how history still lingers beneath the surface—sometimes with a ghostly twist.

Madison Square
24 min

Beneath the quiet charm of Madison Square lies a battlefield of memory. Flanked by statues and historic homes, this square was once a hub of Civil War activity. At this stop, we’ll uncover the stories of Confederate generals, local resistance, and the Union occupation that reshaped Savannah’s streets. As you sip your drink nearby, you'll hear how Madison Square became a silent witness to strategy, sacrifice, and Southern defiance—a perfect blend of beauty and bloodshed in the heart of the city.

Johnson Square
30 min

As Savannah’s oldest and most prominent square, Johnson Square was a center of commerce, communication, and Civil War-era decision-making. At this stop, we’ll explore how the city’s elite gathered here—debating secession, funding the Confederacy, and shaping Savannah’s role in the conflict. Surrounded by monuments and whispers of the past, you’ll sip your drink where bankers, generals, and Southern strategists once shaped the fate of a divided nation.

Ellis Square
30 min

Today, Ellis Square is a bustling social hub—but during the Civil War, it was a vital center for commerce, supplies, and auctions that helped fuel the Southern war effort. At this stop, we’ll explore the square’s darker past, its role in the Confederate economy, and how it transformed under Union occupation. With a drink in hand, you’ll stand where soldiers once marched and merchants once profited—a place where war and daily life collided in the heart of Savannah.

It was just ok…..

It was pretty average. The drinks were ridiculously expensive. Tour guide too quiet and didn’t really give more information than signs that were already available. Bars were unaware that we were even coming

Operator response

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear the Battles & Brews experience fell short of what you expected. We appreciate your comments regarding the guide’s volume, the depth of the historical information, and the bar stops. We also understand how disappointing it would be to arrive at a stop and feel that the staff weren’t expecting the group. Your feedback is important to us as we work to ensure the experience is consistent from start to finish.

Lovely way to spend an afternoon. It was a bight lighter on the "battles" component but still had tons of history and our guide was both knowledgeable and entertaining.

While the “battles” portion may not have been quite what you expected, we appreciate you recognizing the knowledge and entertainment our guide brought to the experience. Disappointing Tour

The experience is not as described. You will not stop at 5 bars to learn about the Generals who fought in the war. You will walk through the grids and learn about some history of the grid and statue.

Operator response

Thank you for sharing your feedback, Patricia. We’re sorry to hear the experience didn’t align with your expectations based on the tour description. We appreciate you bringing your concerns about the bar stops and historical content to our attention. Guest feedback like this is valuable as we continually evaluate how clearly we communicate the experience and what guests can expect when booking.

Joann kept us all...

Joann kept us all interested in historic Savannah. It was a chilly evening but we started at 6/Pence and visited other establishments on the way. A walk through a cemetery was informative as well. It ended at bootleggers on the river

Operator response

Thank you, Joan! We’re glad Joann kept everyone engaged while exploring Savannah’s fascinating history. It sounds like you enjoyed discovering several different parts of the city, including the cemetery and the riverfront. We appreciate you joining us despite the chilly evening and taking the time to share your experience!

Great drinks and information

Great tour with lots of fun facts and alcohol! I appreciated that we didn't have to pay for the drinks ahead of time and we could choose which bars we wanted a drink at and which we might not. It is not really about the civil war (Which the description says it is). Our tour guide was up front about that from the beginning. Even so, she did a great job giving information about Savannah and it was still really informative. I would recommend the tour company change the description a bit because if someone wanted to learn about the civil war they might be a bit disappointed.

Operator response

Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed review! We’re glad you enjoyed the fun facts, drinks, and flexibility of choosing what you wanted to order at each stop. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the Civil War focus of the tour description. We’re pleased that your guide was upfront about the experience and still provided an informative and enjoyable evening.
