High hopes lead to greater fall

A friend recommended we take this golfcart tour and raved about their driver/guide Paolo. He was outgoing, knowledgeable and made the 3 hour tour memorable. I’m not so naive to think that every guide would be as great as that but the driver my family and I got was the exact opposite end of the spectrum. Before we even pulled away from the meeting spot, Irfan informed us that he was simply a driver, not a guide. His only job was to drive and nothing more. We could ask questions of course but our review should only be based on his performance as a driver. He even went so far as to cite some Italian law that dictated this arrangement. I assume this was a lie. From the outset, we were basically told to expect a disappointing experience. We progressed through the scheduled stops. Irfan told us the barest of details from time to time and given the street noise, it was difficult to ask questions and hear the response. One of the first stops was St. Peter’s Basilica. Irfan said we could take about 15 minutes to walk around. We visited this site earlier in the day so asked to proceed so we could have more time in other locations. The rest of the tour consisted of about 5 more stops. At none of which we were offered any additional information or even suggestions of points of interest. The last stop was the coliseum. We didn’t know it was the last stop when we stopped there and, unfortunately, we stopped at a location overlooking the coliseum plaza with no obvious footpath down the coliseum itself. This was about 2 hours into the tour. So after taking some pictures we returned to the cart only to be told that the tour was over. We were stunned, we were shorted an hour, and we wanted nothing more than for this experience to end. To his credit, Irfan offered to drop us off at a destination of our choosing. He recommended a restaurant that opened at 8pm. It was presently 6pm and our two children would not last two more hours before eating. We asked to be taken to a Piazza we were familiar with and, again to his credit, Irfan pointed out a restaurant along the way that was open and highly reviewed. He dropped us off, we had a nice dinner, and walked back to our lodging accommodation. Bottom line: Think of this tour as an amuse-bouche of various sites around Rome. You get a little taste and can decide which you’d like to spend more time later. Hopefully you will get a great driver who will make the experience memorable. Otherwise, expect to simply enjoy the time off your feet.

Best sights of Rome

Dario our guide was great. We visited all the key sights in Rome. We had actually been to a few already on our holiday so Dario suggested staying at some we hadn’t seen for a bit longer which was great. He also stopped at some other sights along the way so we didn’t repeat stops and saw new things. This was amazing. The best bit was a quiet view point overlooking the Forum. Thanks Dario.
