Itinerary
Meeting place prior to start the tour
Your tour starts at a meeting location in Rome, where you’ll meet your guide, who provides your round-trip train ticket. Then hop aboard the train for the ride southwest of Rome to Ostia Antica, which lies near the coast. When you arrive, take a 2.5-hour leisurely walking tour through the ancient ruins, noting their highly preserved state for which this archaeological site is so renowned. Dating as far back as the 4th century BC, the ruins include structures like an amphitheater, the Forum of the Corporations, the Collegiate Temple, taverns and public baths. Once home to more than 100,000 people, Ostia was the port city of Ancient Rome. Walk along the main road, Decumanus Maximus, while your guide tells you stories about life in town. Admire the intact Roman statues that line the walkways; pass by the Baths of Neptune, crowned by a mosaic that depicts the Roman god of the sea behind a 4-hourse chariot; and take a seat in the amphitheater, which dates back to 12 BC and was built to hold 3,500 spectators. Shops and apartments make up some of the smaller buildings. When your time at the site is up, you’ll return to Rome by train.

Skip the crowds of Pompeii, do this instead. But keep it a secret. Wonderful tour with all the history of Pompeii but closer to Rome and no crowds. Roberto absolutely fantastic guide.
Ancient Ostia is an incredible place to visit. It was very quiet even in the high season, and the archeological site is very well preserved and fascinating. Our guide Alessandra was very knowledgeable about the site and Roman history.
Rob was great! We learned so much. He did leave is at the forum and we had to find our way to cafe, bathrooms and museum on out own with no map. I think that is the only thing that could be improved- provide a map so we can see which sites the tour did not cover and see if we wanted to go by those. Return train tickets are provided
Alberto did a fantastic job giving this tour! He was very informative and gave a lot of interesting facts. The ruins were incredible. It was an amazing tour, and I highly recommend it.
What a great day I had on the Ostia Antica tour! Everything from the booking to the meeting point was so simple and well planned. Liv, the tour guide, was absolutely fantastic! So knowledgeable and very enthusiastic! You can tell she really loves what she does and I learned so much from her. I was just amazed at her depth of knowledge. Ostia Antica is really beautiful, and even better with a guide. I highly recommend this tour.
We went to Ostia Antica which was like a trip back in time. Our guide Alberto was excellent. He was engaging, likable , informative, and energetic. He also kept an eye on us old folk to make sure he wasn’t going too fast for us. We had a gentleman with a bad back in our tour and Alberto was attentive to him. We were well taken care of.
Ostia Antica is truly a hidden gem! Just a short train ride from Rome, this ancient Roman town is so well-preserved, and unlike Pompeii to the south, so much less crowded! I feel like if you had to choose between the two sites, I would visit Ostia - similar time period, but way less crowded! Of course, Pompeii has the story behind it of the eruption, but if you are in Rome, Ostia Antica is well worth the visit. And, we cannot say enough about our guide, Alberto. He was incredible! He made Roman history and the town of Ostia come alive with his amazing story-telling! Thanks for making this visit for special for us, Alberto!
Alberto was very knowledgeable attentive and patient He made this tour excellent on a very hot sticky day, he found shade and try to stop and talk in a shade
This was a very informative and enjoyable tour. Our tour guide was wonderful!! She was very knowledgeable and very engaging. Rome is filled with history and you don't have to go to Pompeii to see some Archeological ruins. If you have time while in Rome, you should definitely check out Ostia Antica.
Insane how few people go to Ostia Antica, where there are no queues and it's a vast area to explore. Houses, villas, busnisses, temples, public buildings, restaurants, bathouses, lavatries...you name it, there's a ruin of it there. Rob was amazing as a guide and shared a lot of knowledge with us. Would recommend to anyone looking for that piece of history, without the major crowds.
