Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward Round Trip Same Day Return

Description
Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

Originally named Glacier City, Girdwood was founded as a gold mining town. As the number of miners increased, a supply camp arose that also supplied a trail stop on the route between Seward and Ship Creek - the latter of which is now known as Anchorage. Today, Girdwood is loved as a unique recreation destination, thanks to a picturesque setting, an extensive network of trails, and the award-winning Alyeska Resort.

Long day, but well worth it. We loved the beautiful scenery at a casual pace, slowly rolling down the tracks. Raining when we got into Seward, but we put on our raincoats and trudged on. Would book this again. Not sure what to expect from the dining car, but the evening meal had a variety of choices and they were wonderful. Didn’t order the pot roast, with carrots and potatoes, but friends who chose it said it was excellent!
This is such a great experience! The Train staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about everything you see along the way.
There was beautiful scenery the whole time and I appreciated the guides trying to call out animals. It was super comfortable, decent dinner, and clean.
Occasion stop to get out and look around would be good.
The round-trip train ride from Anchorage to Seward was one of the highlights of our Alaska trip! The scenery along the route was absolutely breathtaking, and the guides shared so many interesting facts about the area's history, wildlife, and landmarks, making the journey both educational and entertaining. We had a great time exploring Seward before heading back, and it was the perfect way to experience this beautiful coastal town. While it's a long day, it is absolutely worth it for the incredible views and the amazing wildlife we saw along the way. If you're visiting Alaska, I highly recommend this train ride—it was an unforgettable experience!
What a great train ride from Denali to anchorage..
Me and the friend took the train up to seward , and it was a very enjoyable trip , both ways. Well worth the experience!! The guidesBoth ways were awesome and explained everything down to the flowers in the area that we were passing. Seward is a very enjoyable little town and an excellent destination for this trip.
Your experience will be affected by your fellow passengers. On the way to Seward we had a large group of young people that were rowdy, loud and obnoxious. Yelling out several false claims of spotting wildlife and then laughing how they made everyone look. Also some constantly crying babies on board. On the return trip we had the opposite. Friendly and respectful people some with well behaved children. We could actually hear what the tour guides were saying That trip I would give 5 stars.
Everyone must do this railroad. You see so much of beautiful Alaska. We did the gold tickets which I say is a must. Breakfast, drinks, snacks everything included. But most of all you can see all sides and you have a viewing area on back of train car. It was excellent.
Looks good but could be better with addition to other boat trips and other excellence activities
