Lucy’s fossil was discovered in 1974 at Hadar, Afar Region and this big discovery changed the way we understand Human Evolution. The exhibit on the first floor contains objects from ancient and medieval periods, as well as regalia and memorabilia from former rulers including the famous Emperor Haile Selassie. The other Exhibit contains artwork in chronological order, from traditional to contemporary works while the third floor comprises rich ethnographic displays.

Disappointing Tour

Unfortunately, the tour did not meet my expectations. I would not recommend it to someone looking for a tour of Addis Ababa. Even before the tour began, there was poor communication. I was told to contact one guide, but then rerouted to two other guides before finally reaching the correct person. The guide didn't respond to my messages until 4:45, even though tour was supposed to start at 4:30. We didn't actually begin until closer to 5 pm. I was told that it was too late in the day to visit the National Museum, even though the itinerary shows it's supposed to be an hour-long visit. When I expressed disappointment at this, we rushed over and went into the museum as it was closing for the day. The staff were literally waiting to lock up and go home. We spent about 10 minutes inside. We were also supposed to visit Bata Mariam Church for 2 hours, and Mercato for an hour but didn't visit at all except for driving by. I was asked if I wanted to get out of the car to see the market, but declined since it was closing. Unfortunately, most of the tour was spent inside of the car driving around. I didn't get to experience much of the city. My guide, Wonde, was friendly, enthusiastic, and somewhat knowledgeable about the history of Ethiopia and Addis Ababa. The highlight of the tour was getting to experience an Ethiopian coffee shop, but otherwise I was disappointed by the tour and didn't receive the full value for what I paid.

Great Addis Ababa Transit City Tour

We had a wonderful experience on our Addis Ababa city tour! As this was our 6th time transiting through Ethiopia, we wanted to make the most of our long layover and learn more about the country’s rich history, culture and traditions. Our guide, Temesgen, was knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about sharing Ethiopia’s heritage. We visited Ba’eta Mariam Church, learnt about Emperor Menelik II and Ethiopia’s history of resisting European colonialism, and gained fascinating insights into the country’s religious traditions, including the monthly celebrations honouring the Virgin Mary. We also learnt about Ethiopia’s unique calendar, the Amharic language and its beautiful Semitic script. Experiencing traditional Ethiopian coffee at a local coffee shop, driving through the vibrant Mercato market and ending the evening at Mount Entoto to admire the city lights made the experience even more memorable. What we particularly appreciated was how much we learnt along the way. The tour was more than simply visiting attractions; it gave us a genuine appreciation for Ethiopian culture and history. Our guide, Temesgen, made excellent use of our limited time, ensuring we experienced as much as possible without feeling rushed. It was a memorable family experience, and we would highly recommend this tour to anyone with a layover in Addis Ababa who wants to explore beyond the airport! 🇪🇹

Great, quick city tour

We had about an eight hour layover so booked a quick city tour. Our guide was Henok and he was excellent. He arrived early and took us to all the sites we requested in four hours-The National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Tamoca Coffee, the market and a few other highlights. He was very knowledgeable and a really nice guy. Addis Ababa is a fascinating place so recommend this tour if you don’t have much time.

Henok Turned a Terrible Day Into Something Beautiful

I arrived in Addis Ababa carrying the weight of one of the worst travel days of my life. A cancelled flight with Ethiopian Airlines, a frustrating experience at the Skylight hotel, and no cell service to resolve the cascading problems—I was stressed, exhausted, and frankly, not in the best headspace. You could say my presence in that car was radioactive. Henok didn't miss a beat. He met my mood with warmth and immediate practical help, offering his own phone so I could call Italy and start untangling the mess I'd inherited. But more than that, he was genuinely upbeat throughout the entire tour, sharing stories and insights about Ethiopia and its people with real passion. He made me laugh when I needed it most. What struck me most was his flexibility. When I mentioned a few things I was interested in seeing, he didn't just nod politely—he actually pivoted the tour to include them. We could have easily stretched those four hours into six or seven if I'd had the time, and he would have happily made it happen. Instead, he understood I needed to get back to the airport to handle unfinished business, and he got me there with everything I wanted to see intact. His driver was fantastic too—skilled, attentive, and part of making the whole experience feel seamless and safe. Sometimes you take a tour and see some sights. Sometimes you take a tour and have an experience that reminds you why travel matters. Henok gave me the latter on a day when I really needed it. He's exactly the kind of guide who makes you believe you chose the right place to visit. Highly recommended. Ask for Henok.

Many highlights - but beware, no private tour.

We generally really enjoyed the tour! I would like to give 4.5/5 stars. We saw exciting places. At our explicit request, we were also able to go to the bar of the tallest building, which was the absolute highlight. This should be included in every tour! What we did not like so much was that the tour was advertised as a private tour, so we would be flexible with the program. Unfortunately, it was not a private tour; instead, we were grouped with another participant. As a result, the price/performance ratio was not so great.
