Description

This non-technical Kilimanjaro camping route is relatively new and one of the most popular routes currently chosen for ascending Kilimanjaro for its scenery, views and route profile. The route starts in the remote west Kilimanjaro area through the forest reserve and generally is much quieter due to it’s distant starting point. The route approaches the Kibo cone through the Shira Plateau and eventually joining the southern circuit passing the small ‘scrambling’ (using your hands and legs) section at the Barranco wall which truly gives you that mountain climbing feeling without any special equipment or experience.

Meru and Kilimanjaro summits!

We did the 4 day Meru climb and the 8 day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho route in September 2026. It was actually less crowded than we expected. We had an amazing crew that was so helpful, nice and caring. We had awesome guides (Lightgod and Iddy) who took our daily health checks very serious. At the end of the climb, the crew almost felt like one big family! Thanks to their support all three of us (23F, 56F, 58M) were able to summit both mountains. The food was delicious, our tents were comfortable and the portable toilet was amazing. An unforgettable experience that we would highly recommend to anyone looking for an adventure!

We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your time with Lightgod, Iddy and the rest of the crew, and especially that their care, support and daily health checks helped make the experience both enjoyable and successful. It is also great to hear that the food, tents and portable toilet all added to your comfort along the way. Thank you again for choosing Shah Tours for both climbs and for recommending the experience so highly. We will be very happy to share your kind words with the entire mountain team. It was the best experience we have ever had with Shah Tours. We always felt completely comfortable and well taken care of. The guides, porters, and cook were incredibly kind and friendly. They always greeted us with a smile and even sang for us. Even at 4,700 meters above sea level, they baked us a cake because it was our wedding anniversary. That was such a special and unforgettable gesture. I can honestly say that this was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives, and we would recommend Shah Tours to anyone without hesitation! Thank you all and best wishes to Mathayo, Felix and the Team! We miss you guys.

Pole pole to the roof of africa with Shah, was great.

When deciding which company to book for our Kilimanjaro and Safari trip in Tanzanie we have been in contact with several companies. We wanted to do the private tour as a couple. We had 9 full days to organize. Firstly we thought we will do 7 days and 2 days safari (Tarangire and Ngorngoro). Nevertheless, as our priority was Kilimanjaro we selected 8 days Lemosho route to increase our chances to reach the top. This left only 1 day for safari first. I was trying to discuss with companies the options to go faster If we feel well and then possibly have time to do both national Parks of Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Shah Tours tourned out to be the only very flexible operator to offer this option of shortening the trip If everything goes well. So, on the day 6, when arriving to Kosovo camp from Karaga camp, we asked If we could proceed with our summit on the same day, they did not hesitate to support us. During the whole trip the guides (Innocent and Leon) and the porters shared very positive energy and support. A Lot of dancing, laughter and happy faces even in hard moments. Finally, thanks to all that, we manager to finish our hike in 7 days instead of 8 and had enough time to include another day of safari in our itinerary. No planning, no phone calls, no waiting. Shah was monitoring our progress and once the office received the message we are descending on day 7, everything was organized (additional accomodation and guide for safari, food and transport). We had amazing time in tanzanie, Thank you Shah Tours for your work and efforts in making our trip unforgetable.

Operator response

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful review and for trusting Shah Tours with both your Kilimanjaro climb and safari! We’re very happy that the 8 day Lemosho Route gave you the time and confidence you wanted for the mountain, and even happier that everything came together so well once your progress allowed the itinerary to be adjusted. Decisions on Kilimanjaro always depend on how climbers are feeling and the conditions at the time, so it was wonderful that Innocent, Leon and the crew were able to support you safely while our office team reorganised the arrangements below the mountain. It sounds like there was plenty of laughter, dancing and positive energy along the way, which is exactly the kind of spirit we love to hear about from our crews. Congratulations on reaching the Roof of Africa, and we’re delighted you were also able to enjoy both Tarangire and Ngorongoro before heading home. We’ll be very pleased to share your kind words with the entire team. Warm wishes from everyone at Shah Tours!

Kilimanjaro

We planned this trip for several months and during that time there were some unexpected flight changes. Shah Tours and Ramon were helpful in adjusting accordingly and providing options that would still allow us to accomplish our desires. As for Kilimanjaro- the planning, execution, and communication was 5 star. This ultimately lead to a very enjoyable trip and more importantly one that was memorable in so many ways. Our guide was Mathayo and his assistant was Calvin. Both are excellent and complement each other well. Very knowledgeable and there to get you to the top SAFELY. Listen to them. Let them set the pace. We wanted to get moving faster and they asked what’s the rush? When you do the 7 day Lemosho- take your time. They’ll charm you with conversation and keep you going pole pole! David- AKA King David- chef extraordinaire. This man deserves the best chef on Kili award. Between a Kenyan, American and a Polish in our group- he made sure we were all well fed. Tasty and delicious. Lots of variety. One day, I showed him pictures of pizza I made at home. Dinner that day- pizza! He is a restaurant operator and he is AMAZING! Don’t miss out on this guy. The porters, and other support staff were also excellent. Mathayo manages them well and you can see the admiration they have for him. As for Shah Tours- here is the why for us- They are members of KPAP- an organization that believes in the fair treatment of porters. This was verified by our team of porters. They were all very enthusiastic and spoke accolades of the family owned business. They seemed to have personal knowledge of the owners- which gave us the feeling that drop top to bottom there was some transparency. Ramon who was our agent communicated frequently and communicated well. When we had cheaper quotes, we realized it meant missing some part of an experience. I’m glad we didn’t let the Pennie’s shadow our judgement. The idea of table service while you enjoy the view when you’re tired is priceless. The fact that Alex would help us pack our bags, assemble our gaiters, ask our son what he needs, and then help keep him motivated with cookies, etc. makes this experience memorable. I highly recommend this operator and the individuals mentioned above. If you ask for them, they will assemble the dream team we had. I hope your experience will be like ours!

Operator response

Thank you very much for sharing such a wonderful and detailed review of your Kilimanjaro climb with us. We are so pleased to hear that, despite the unexpected flight changes, Ramon was able to assist with the arrangements and keep the plans moving smoothly. It is always our goal to remain flexible where possible so that guests can still enjoy the experience they hoped for. Your kind words for Mathayo and Calvin mean a great deal. They are both excellent mountain professionals, and their calm approach, careful pacing, and focus on safety are exactly what we hope every climber experiences on Kilimanjaro. “Pole pole” can feel slow at first, but as you rightly said, it is often the best way to reach the summit safely and enjoy the journey along the way. We also loved reading your comments about David “King David” will be very proud! The pizza story made us smile, and we are delighted that he kept your Kenyan, American, and Polish group so well fed throughout the trek. A special thank you also for recognizing Alex, the porters, and the wider support team. They work incredibly hard behind the scenes, and it is wonderful to know their care, encouragement, and attention to detail helped make the climb memorable for your group and your son. We truly appreciate your comments about KPAP and the fair treatment of porters. As a family-owned Tanzanian company, our mountain crew are at the heart of everything we do, and their welfare is something we take very seriously. Thank you again for choosing Shah Tours and for recommending us so highly. We are grateful to have been part of your Kilimanjaro adventure and hope the memories remain with you for many years to come. Warm regards, The Shah Tours Team

Adventure of a lifetime made perfect! 👌🏽

We ventured on the 8 day Lemosho trek for a friends 60th and my 37th birthday trip/adventure. We heard about Shah Tours through friends and family who have used them as the tour/trek operator whether it’s for trekking up Kilimanjaro or safaris. From initial engagement with them a year ahead before our trip to the last day Shah Tours, its staff, tour guides and porters have gone above and beyond our expectations. From the bespoke trip/tour requirements numerous messages/comms back and forth to ensure all 10 people in our group were fully comfortable and understood what’s involved was amazing. The time we landed at Kilimanjaro airport, we were greeted by Calvin the head tour guide, our commute to our hotel/lodge was very pleasant and spacious to accommodate group of 10 people and all our luggage. Calvin introduced him self and provided brief info of what we can expect on day of landing and checking into our hotel which was then followed by a more detailed briefing with 2 other tour guides (Innocent & Richard). We checked into the hotel then were provided our detailed briefing which was very in depth and every one felt fully informed of what to expect on the days ahead. The hotel/lodge that shah tours includes in their trek package was absolutely amazing!! It felt like a private 5star tropical retreat. Just gutted we couldn’t spend more time there than couple days. (Day before and after the trek) The shah tours team also ensured that we had all the gear which was mentioned in the checklist which was provided well in advance. Where the team noticed we may have missed something that they made a note and ensured we were able to obtain them for hire. I would recommend hiring as much bulky kit/equipment from the tour company as it will save you a lot of time/space in your luggage bags and also its cost efficient of your only buying stuff just for a one off trek! Next day we set off for the next 8 days trekking up Kilimanjaro. The 8 days consisted of gradual altitude increases and to allow our bodies to acclimatise to the altitude and give us the best chance to reach the summit. The various terrain we went through was absolutely amazing and really felt like an adventure. Every step we were guided through by Calvin, Richard, Innocent, Daniel & Mattay, we couldn’t have done it without these guys and the porters they are the true heroes having to trek up themselves but then also carry the responsibility of us and our wellbeing. The porters ensured that we were very well looked after from transporting our duffle bags from one camp to another, ensuring we were fully feed and well nourished. I can’t believe how these guys do it cooking for the tourist group but then also having to take care of themselves as well. (Incredible!) We created a bond with everyone on the trek as it really felt like we were all in this together! I cannot thank the team enough as this will go down as an adventure of a lifetime and I am so glad that Shah Tours made it memorably special for us. Thank you so much and I will cherish this memory for a lifetime. If ever I am planning a return to Tanzania and thinking of my next adventure will definitely be going with Shah Tours!! 🙏🏽💙 Kilimanjaro 🏔️
