We have done a lot of wildlife tours but this one was the best we’ve ever done. From the communication by Didek in the office, to the guides, to Bukit Lawang, to the wildlife- everything was superb and I can’t recommend highly enough. Our guide Bremma was amazing. Excellent English, friendly and knowledgeable. We got to see so many orangutans- the big alpha male, mummy’s and babies but also green vipers, white handed gibbon and Thomas leaf monkeys- all because of his expertise. He and Adit(assistant guide- so friendly and protective) always got us in the right places. The food was superb with so much care and attention- especially the fruit platter. We swam twice in the river by the campsite, then they took us to a great waterfall swimming spot and lastly tubing down the fast flowing river was the icing on the cake. If you are into wildlife trekking you have to go to Bukit Lawang and use this company- you will not be disappointed.

We organize unique and unforgettable jungle trekking eco tours that help preserve the Gunung Leuser National Park and its endangered orangutans. But we offer more than just traditional trekking experiences. Our English-speaking guides are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia), and they enjoy sharing their knowledge with you while they help keep the Gunung Leuser National Park clean and safe for both humans and animals! Our day tours and activities make a difference in the local community. When you purchase one of our trekking tours, 10% of the proceeds go to children in Bukit Lawang who can’t afford to go to school and single mothers who struggle financially. This money helps the children attend school and eventually find jobs that will allow them to support themselves and their families.

Crazy at Bukit Lawang!
Had a really nice time in the jungle. We have seen and learned a lot from Naga and Ragil! A delicious meal. Also had a fine overnight stay.

Apps, rafting, and coziness
Had a wonderful trip with Nata and Ragil! Seen many different monkeys and stayed in the middle of the jungle with delicious food from mama jungle. A nice trip despite the heavy rain!

Food poisoning
We liked the camping close to the river but the trekking itself was nothing special if you have done Jungle trekking before. We saw on the first day a few Orang-Utans and other Monkeys but jothing on the second day. I would not recommend to go longer than 2 days. Moreover, me and my partner ended up having food poisoning from the food on the tour as soon as we came back to our hotel on the second day. We threw up the whole night and had high fever. Another member of our group was also sick from the tour. I do not recommend to book with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking. They need to improve their hygenic standards!

However, we would like to mention that this was not reported to our team while you were still in Bukit Lawang. As you can imagine, it is also difficult to determine the cause of an illness after the fact, as food poisoning can have different causes and symptoms can sometimes appear after consuming food or drinks from various places. Outstanding!!! Great guides
This tour exceeded our expectations!! We saw so many Orangutans up close, including an older adult male, young ones, a mating pair, and a mom w baby. We were so close that we had to duck out of the way several times. Our guides "Jungle D" and Justin were absolutely terrific! They were funny, patient and very sweet, and took great care of our son. They brought us to the best places, and we had lots of time to explore and take breaks. We also saw many gibbons, which was very special. FYI the first half of the trip is very busy, as there are larger groups doing one-day trips; the rest of the trip is a lot more quiet. Camp was very peaceful and we fell asleep to the sounds of the river. For the overnight trek, wear sturdy water shoes to cross the river, and be prepared to hike up and down very steep hills with ropes and limited footholds. It was the dry season so there were practically no bugs or mosquitos, which was amazing. The tubing at the end was a fun way to end the trip. We totally recommend this tour, it was the highlight of our whole trip.

Do it, especially if you are a hiker
Everything was run so well, starting with all the communication to and from Dedek. I asked a lot of questions and he happily answered each one. He also expertly coordinated or travel from Medan, two nights in a Bukit Lawang local lodge, our overnight in the jungle, another night in the lodge and transportation to Lake Toba. On the trek we saw an abundance of wildlife including orangatans, and variety of different monkeys, lizards, insects and birds. Truly a unique and awesome experience. Our guides Nasir and Risky were so very helpful to us as we are in our 60s and,to be honest, not prepared for the strenuous hike. They were wonderful in every way. The overnight is very "rustic" but we had great food and wonderful young teammates for good conversation. And of course the water tubing at the end was so fun and refreshing. All in all this is probably geared toward a younger group. In retrospect we should have done an easier day trip. But, that's our fault and I will still cherish the memorize made.

An amazing adventure!
It has been an incredible experience! The service was excellent from the very first moment; they were attentive throughout and took care of every detail. The guides played a key role in the excursion—they were lively and sociable. The group size is small, which is really appreciated. They are very respectful of nature and wildlife, unlike other companies. I would definitely do this again!
