Excellent trip with perfect weather and amazing numbers of active orcas and humpbacks. Lively and informative commentary from captain Andy.
Thank you so much for sharing this! We’re really glad to hear you had such an excellent trip with Captain Andy and that you were able to see both orcas and humpbacks along the way. It sounds like a fantastic day out on the water. We appreciate you joining us and hope to see you again soon!
We have lived on Vancouver Island but never taken a whale-watching boat tour. We choose Parksville because the Victoria's harbour had too many tour operators so crowded boats in the feeding grounds. Andy was our tour guy and he was not only knowledgeable, he answered questions and even gave us time when a 2nd sighting appeared. It is a one hour fast boat ride south to get to the feeding grounds. Once there, it was totally up to chance whether a sighting would happen. Weather, time of year, how many other boats in the area are all factors. We were lucky to see at least 4 humpback whales. If the goal is to take pictures, have a good zoom on your cellphone and hold steady. Take a hundred shots to get 5 good ones. Action is fast and whales move quickly They're on one side of the boat and then the other. The tour operators must keep 100m away by law although if a whale comes close to the boat while engine is cut, it's totally by chance. On our way back, we sighted "Chainsaw", an older orca known to the operators with distinctive markings on his dorsal fin. Because Andy gave us time to watch, he was in a rush to get us back to the dock by 4pm. It was a very fast and thrilling one hour ride back as we jumped waves. If you like roller coasters, you will love the feel of the freefall. Ordinarily, the ride back should be more sedate like the ride out but as it was, we were 15 mins late in returning. Tip: The website says to dress warmly. It is very cold out in the middle of the strait, but we are required by law to wear a full preserver suit. Whatever you're wearing inside is fine. Wear good shoes and keep hats securely tied. Also says you can take a snack. There was not much time to eat as the resting spot was used for spotting whales. Besides, some may actually feel nauseous from the movement of the boat. Tip: Parking is tricky. The first lot on Lee Rd is long-term for weekly parking. The second lot has parking for French Creek Pub/Cafe 365. The third lot is paid parking but you can only park in yellow lined spaces. White and blue are reserved. You must find a space before paying the $9.50. This parking is easy to pay for as you don't need a phone. It accepts credit card and is good for the full day. Go early. You're supposed to be there 40 mins before, I'd give it another 10 if you're not familiar or it's the weekend and the marina is busy. Tip: You will be warned to use the washroom before the tour. Good advice. They have a washroom on the boat, but there is no good time (or way) to get to it when you're out. Tip: Go afterwards and have dinner at French Creek Pub since you already have parking and order their fish and chips. Huge and delicious portions. Make a reservation as they're already full at 4:30pm. Tip: Wear sunscreen & lip balm. Four hours in the sun will leave your face sunburnt and salty.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed review—and for all the great tips for future guests! We’re really glad you chose to finally join us for your first whale watching experience on Vancouver Island and that you had such a memorable day out on the water. We appreciate you highlighting your experience with Andy as well. Hope to welcome you back again sometime!
An amazing trip out on the water. Although aww didn’t see any Orca’s we saw plenty of Humpback Whales. Our guide Andi was really good and informative, we learnt so much about the whales whilst on the tour. Would recommend to anyone visiting Parksville.
We are happy to hear you enjoyed the trip and saw humpbacks! Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
A great half day out on the ocean with close up watching opportunities although or guide Shawn stayed at a comfortable distance all the time. The eagles came up close themselves ! Great professional, very knowledgeable. Unforgettable
Wonderful experience. Knowledgeable guides. Safety conscious. We saw two different types of whales and learned a lot about each.
Captain Simon was awesome! We were fortunate to experience superb weather, magnificent views of the humpback whale and killer whales, and sea lions going about their day.
Absolutely awesome! The water was like glass...very calm! Brand new boat! Simon was an awesome guide! Would highly recommend if you are even considering whale watching. Saw a pod of killer whales hunting. Catching and eating their prey, a bunch of humpback, including a baby, harbor seals and tons of loons! Beautiful scenery!
