Don’t hesitate to book this tour! It’s a little off the beaten path, and was a lovely day just outside Porto. You get to get away from the crowds and learn more about the history of sardines’ importance to Portugal and the impact of government decisions on the canneries and people’s perceptions of sardines over the past century. We tasted wonderful food in abundance and our guide, Marcel, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and helped us gain a much deeper understanding of the area. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tour.

A Taste of Matosinhos with Marcel

Sardines in Porto!!
This was our second Culinary Backstreets tour with Carine in Porto and a highlight of our trip to Porto. We learned everything about sardines and the canning factory was so interesting! Carine is a great guide and this tour is not to be missed!

A great way to get off the beaten track in Porto and dive into the world of sardines.
A great way to spend the day. I love sardines and wanted to spend the day better understanding the history and culture surrounding this sustainable and yummy fish. Marcel was amazing, thorough, interesting and made the tour lots of fun. The food was great and the other people on the tour were very nice. This is my 4 the Culinary Backstreets tour and it did not disappoint.

Marcel’s tour , made for a great day
Marcel was fantastic. He treated us like a close friend showing us around his neighborhood. We learned so much about the history of the neighborhood and got to try some delicious foods along the way.

Highlight of 2 weeks exploring Portugal
I'm a repeat customer of Culinary Backstreets, having taken their tours in 3 different cities and countries. I'm always impressed with their itineraries and customer service; and this tour was no exception.
Get out of the crowds in Porto and take this tour of a nearby port and fishing town. Marcel was a phenomenal guide and teacher- he is extremely knowledgeable about all things Portugal, very entertaining and just a ton of fun to hang out with. Each food stop was delicious and authenticly local. The stories and info shared were unique and grew my understanding and appreciation of this beautiful country. Can not recommend enough.
If the weather is good, bring your swimsuit for a bonus day on the beach after the tour!

Amazing guide and tour
Both Carine and the tour were amazing. She was very informative about Porto history and very passionate about the Porto food scene, particularly built around the docks and the fishing industry. I’m glad that she told us at the beginning of the tour that we didn’t have to eat all of everything. I enjoyed every dish we were presented with, including some things I’ve never eaten before, but if I had eaten all of it, I wouldn’t have been able to walk. It really helped me see Porto and the Matosinhos waterfront in a new light and understand it it’s ties to the fishing industry.

Great tour
Great food tour! We walked through the port area, watched the fish trade in action, and stopped at local spots to eat along the way. Our guide shared fascinating, detailed insights into Portuguese food traditions — for example, why codfish is sold salted everywhere. Really engaging and informative.
Our guide herself was warm and welcoming. Beyond the tour itself, she also gave us great local recommendations for the city. Highly recommend!
