Montego Bay is Jamaica's main holiday gateway: a bay-front city with beaches, plantation great houses and Negril, Falmouth and Ocho Rios within day-trip range. The choices that matter in 2026 are where to stay while some big resorts are still closed after Hurricane Melissa, which months to avoid for rain and storms, and which of the long day trips are worth a full day in a minibus. This guide lays out official ticket prices, the climate month by month, what has reopened and current prices across 1,440 bookable tours.

Most visitors split their time between three things. The town itself has the Hip Strip, officially Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, Doctor's Cave Beach and the historic Sam Sharpe Square downtown. The Rose Hall area holds the great houses and a row of all-inclusive resorts. Beyond that, nearly everything people book is a day trip: rafting near Falmouth, Negril's beach and cliffs, Dunn's River Falls in St Ann, and the south coast.

Is Montego Bay open after Hurricane Melissa?

Yes for flights, beaches and the main sights; check your hotel

Hurricane Melissa came ashore near New Hope in Westmoreland on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 storm with winds of 185 mph. It killed 45 people in Jamaica and caused more than USD 12.2 billion of damage. Montego Bay did not take the direct hit, but much of the city flooded, including the port and the Sangster terminal, where much of the ceiling collapsed.

Recovery for visitors was fast where it mattered most. The Jamaica Tourist Board reports full operations at all three international airports and seaports open to cruise calls. By early December 2025, Doctor's Cave Bathing Club, Harmony Beach Park, Chukka and Rose Hall's Main Street were running again, and the state-run Dunn's River Falls had reopened in November.

Hotels are the weak point. By June 2026 Jamaica's room count was back above 80% of pre-storm levels, but Montego Bay's hotels were the worst affected and several were not due back until later in the year. The government expects all 33,000 rooms on the island to be available by December 2026. The UK government still notes that some western communities lack power and piped water and that healthcare is limited in the worst-hit areas.

Verdict: Montego Bay is open for a normal holiday, and most of the main sights in this guide have reported reopening. Before paying, confirm that your specific resort is taking guests, and book tours with free cancellation in case a south-coast stop is still being repaired.

When is the best time to visit Montego Bay?

December to April is the best time: driest months and highs around 30 °C

MonthAverage highAverage lowRain
January29.8 °C22.2 °C77 mm
February30.0 °C22.1 °C42 mm

October32.2 °C24.3 °C159 mm
November31.1 °C23.9 °C107 mm
December30.2 °C23.0 °C81 mm

Montego Bay is warm all year: average highs never drop below 29.8 °C and lows stay above 22 °C. What changes is the rain. February to April are the driest months, May brings a first wet spell, and September to November is the wettest stretch, with October averaging 159 mm over 14 rain days. The tourist board describes the same pattern: rainy seasons in May–June and September–November.

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November and peaks from August to October. Melissa, a late-October storm, is a reminder of what that peak can mean. If you travel then, choose refundable rooms and tours, and keep an eye on forecasts in the days before you fly.

Verdict: Go between December and April for the driest weather. July is the best summer compromise, with only 66 mm of rain on average, but it is the hottest part of the year and inside hurricane season. Avoid booking non-refundable trips for September and October.

Reggae Sumfest, normally a week of concerts in Montego Bay in July, ran as a single night in St Ann on 18 July 2026 because of hurricane damage; check where the 2027 edition will be held before planning around it.

How do you get from the airport and get around Montego Bay?

Take an authorised taxi or pre-booked transfer; use coaches only between towns

OptionHow it worksGood for
Authorised airport taxiJUTA and JCAL share one desk just outside the Customs exit; no fares published online, so agree the price firstHotels in town and Rose Hall
JTB-approved transfer or tour minibusBlue Jamaica Tourist Board sticker, driver with photo ID; book through your hotel or tourAirport runs and all day trips
Route taxiRed PPV or white P plates, marked TAXI, shared with other passengers on fixed routesShort hops for confident travellers
Knutsford Express coachScheduled air-conditioned coaches, depot to depot, tickets onlineKingston, Ocho Rios, Negril, Mandeville
JUTC express busState bus with express routes between Kingston and Montego BayBudget trips to Kingston
Rental carDrive on the left; highways are toll roads; physical licence requiredSouth coast on your own schedule

Sangster International sits 4.8 km east of Montego Bay. The airport lists two authorised taxi companies, JUTA and JCAL, at a shared desk outside Customs, but publishes no fares, so confirm the price before loading bags. UK government advice is to use Jamaica Tourist Board approved taxis and minibuses for airport transfers, excursions and sightseeing; their drivers carry photo ID and a blue JTB sticker.

Inside town, licensed route taxis carry red PPV or white P plates and the TAXI marking, and the driver displays a Transport Authority ID. For anything longer, a charter taxi booked through your hotel, with the fare confirmed in advance, is simpler. Between towns, Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches to Kingston, Ocho Rios, Negril and Mandeville; it is depot to depot, and a trip that needs a change means two separate bookings.

Driving is on the left, with limits of 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on highways, and the highways are tolled. North American licences are valid for three months per visit and UK licences for twelve; carry the physical card, as copies are not accepted. The tourist board gives the minimum rental age as 25 in one place and 23 in another, so check with the rental firm. The US State Department tells its own staff not to drive between cities at night or use public buses, and advises US citizens to do the same.

Verdict: Do not rent a car for a Montego Bay beach holiday. Use an authorised taxi from the airport, take tour pickups for Dunn's River, Negril and the rafting rivers, and rent only if you want to explore the south coast slowly, by daylight.

What are the best things to do in Montego Bay?

Spend a morning at Doctor's Cave Beach Must do· Morning, 2–3 hours

Doctor's Cave Bathing Club was founded in 1906 on beach land donated by Dr Alexander James McCatty, and it has run as a bathing club ever since. It opens daily from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm; the club lists admission at 8 for adults and 4 for children under 12, which visitor reports put in US dollars.

Tour Rose Hall Great House by day, or on the night tour Must do· Day tour 9:15 am–4 pm, Mon–Sat; night tour Wed–Sat

Rose Hall is an 18th-century plantation house that stood as a ruin until it was restored in the 1960s. Guided tours last 45 minutes to an hour and tell the story of the estate along with the legend of Annee Palmer, the 'White Witch'. The day and garden tour runs Monday to Saturday from 9:15 am to 4 pm (closed Sundays and public holidays) and costs USD 30 for adults.

The Haunted Night Tour runs Wednesday to Saturday from about 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, costs USD 35 for adults and USD 15 for children, and must be booked ahead; the house advises parental discretion for under-12s. Next door, Cinnamon Hill Great House has its own tour on weekdays from 10 am to 3 pm for USD 25. Packages with hotel transport typically run around $96.

Float down the Martha Brae on a bamboo raft Must do· Half day, with transfers

Rafting on the Martha Brae, run by River Raft Limited from Rafters Village near Falmouth, is the classic slow river trip from Montego Bay. Melissa clogged the river with fallen trees, and the operator set a tentative restart of 15 December 2025 once it was cleared. Rafting on the Great River and the Lethe is the cheaper alternative in the catalogue, typically around $125 against $154 for the Martha Brae.

See the glowing Luminous Lagoon at Falmouth after dark Worth it· Evening

At Falmouth, where the Martha Brae River meets the sea, the Luminous Lagoon (also called Glistening Waters) lights up at night when bioluminescent microorganisms are disturbed. Boat trips go out after dark, so this pairs naturally with an afternoon of rafting. Night tours from Montego Bay typically cost around $105; no official operator price or post-hurricane status was found, so check with your operator.

Walk Sam Sharpe Square and the Cultural Centre downtown Worth it· 1–2 hours

The main square downtown is named after National Hero Samuel Sharpe, who led the 1831–32 Christmas Rebellion and was hanged in Montego Bay in 1832. On its south-west corner, the Montego Bay Cultural Centre stands on the site of the courthouse where he was sentenced and houses National Gallery West and National Museum West. A 2017 government report gave hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 9 am to 5 pm, and USD 8 for overseas visitors; resellers now list Monday to Saturday, so confirm before going.

Use Harmony Beach Park for a free swim Worth it· Wednesday to Sunday daytime

Harmony Beach Park, run by the state Urban Development Corporation, charges no entry. The park is open daily from 6 am to 10 pm, but the beach itself only opens Wednesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Parking is JMD 200 an hour or JMD 700 a day.

Snorkel or sail in the Montego Bay Marine Park Worth it· Half day

Nearly 16 square kilometres of the bay, including Bogue Island, are protected as the Montego Bay Marine Park; a snorkelling or catamaran trip is the usual way to see it. Catamaran and snorkelling cruises typically run around $143, while private yacht charters push the top of that range far higher.

Ride an ATV trail in the hills Worth it· Half day

ATV and buggy rides are among the most booked outings from Montego Bay, often combined with rafting or a beach stop. They typically cost around $200. Pick one with hotel pickup included.

Stop in Falmouth for its Georgian streets Worth it· 1–2 hours, on the way to rafting

Falmouth, about 29 km east of Montego Bay, was founded in 1769 and is one of the Caribbean's best-preserved Georgian towns, with houses and merchant buildings from about 1790 to 1840. Its cruise port opened in early 2011. An hour or two fits easily into a rafting or lagoon day.

Worth skipping

  • Jamaica Swamp Safari near Falmouth until it confirms reopening: it was badly damaged by Melissa and closed for a rebuild.
  • Private yacht charters as a first boat trip: a shared catamaran covers the same marine park for a fraction of the price.
  • Downtown at night without a reason to be there: the UK government lists several Montego Bay districts to be careful in, and the tourist areas are where visitors are rarely affected.
  • Paying a website to file your C5 form: the official form is free.

Negril is the best day trip: Seven Mile Beach by day, Rick's Café at sunset Must do· Full day, ending at sunset

Negril, at Jamaica's westernmost point, is 80.8 km from Sangster airport and about 90 minutes by road. Rick's Café has stood on its cliffs since April 1974 and has been rebuilt after hurricanes Gilbert in 1988 and Ivan in 2004. It is open from noon to 10 pm with no cover charge, and local divers jump more than 10 metres into the sea there.

Negril lies partly in Westmoreland, the parish where Melissa came ashore, but its hotels came back early: Sandals Negril and Beaches Negril reopened on 6 December 2025, and Royalton Negril followed on 25 August 2026.

Dunn's River Falls is the classic climb, but a long drive Must do· Full day

Dunn's River Falls & Park in St Ann stretches for more than 183 metres of cascades. The state operator charges overseas visitors USD 25 for adults and USD 17 for children; it opens daily from 8:30 am to 4 pm, and from 7 am on cruise-ship days (Wednesday to Friday). The park sells water shoes, rents lockers and dispatches falls guides. Ocho Rios is about 101 km from Montego Bay, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes each way, so expect cruise passengers if you go from Wednesday to Friday.

Many Dunn's River tours add the Blue Hole and Secret Falls near Ocho Rios, which also sells as a stand-alone trip for around $160.

Nine Mile is for Bob Marley fans Worth it· Full day

Nine Mile, in St Ann parish, is where Bob Marley was born on 6 February 1945. His mausoleum is inside a small church of Ethiopian design on the property. No official admission price was found, so check what your tour includes.

The south coast combines YS Falls, Appleton and Pelican Bar Worth it· Full day

St Elizabeth was among the hardest-hit parishes, and Black River town lost the roofs of nearly 90% of its homes, so this trip needs the most checking. YS Falls, a seven-tiered waterfall with natural pools, reopened on 24 January 2026; it is open 9:30 am to 3 pm, closed Mondays and public holidays, and charges overseas visitors USD 25 for adults and USD 16 for children aged 3–15. Its canopy section is closed until further notice.

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience in the Nassau Valley lists tours Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 3:30 pm, with walk-ins welcome; in January 2026 it was still expected to reopen by February, so ask before you go. Floyd's Pelican Bar, a short boat ride offshore in Parottee Bay, was rebuilt and reopened in February 2026.

Verdict: If you only do one long day trip, make it Negril: it is nearer than Ocho Rios and its sunset at Rick's Café is the payoff. Choose Dunn's River instead only if climbing the falls is the main goal, and leave the south coast for a second visit or a stay with a car.

Jamaican attractions usually post two prices: one in US dollars for overseas visitors and a lower one in Jamaican dollars for residents with ID. YS Falls, for example, charges USD 25 for an overseas adult and JMD 2,400 for a resident. Tax is also moving: tourism activities carry a concessionary 10% general consumption tax, and the government proposes raising it to the standard 15% in two steps from 1 April 2027.

Where should you stay in Montego Bay?

Stay in Montego Bay itself for beaches, restaurants and a short airport ride

Staying in town, around the Hip Strip (officially Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, formerly Gloucester Avenue), keeps you 4.8 km from Sangster airport with Doctor's Cave Beach and Harmony Beach Park within reach. It is the right base if you plan to eat out, walk to the beach and book day trips.

Rose Hall suits all-inclusive stays, but check which resorts are open

Rose Hall has the great houses and a long line of resorts. It is also where the storm's effect on hotels shows most: seven Hyatt-operated properties, including Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall, Dreams Rose Hall, Breathless Montego Bay, Secrets St James, Secrets Wild Orchid and Jewel Grande, were expected to reopen only in early 2027.

Negril is a better base if beach time matters more than sightseeing

Negril is about 90 minutes from Montego Bay, and Sandals, Beaches and Royalton reopened there between December 2025 and August 2026. Stay there if you want a long beach and sunsets; stay in Montego Bay if you want short transfers and the widest choice of tours.

Verdict: First-timers should stay near the Hip Strip. Choose Rose Hall only after confirming your resort is open, and choose Negril if you plan few excursions.

What rules, safety and entry details should you know?

Montego Bay's tourist areas are generally safe; take the usual precautions

The US State Department rates Jamaica at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in its advisory reissued on 23 June 2026. UK advice names parts of Montego Bay to be careful in — Flankers, Barrett Town, Glendevon, Rose Heights and Mount Salem — while noting that tourist areas are not usually affected by gang crime. It also reports sexual assaults in tourist areas, often by someone met socially, and advises against isolated places and deserted beaches, even by day.

Entry for UK visitorsNo visa; usually up to 90 days; passport valid for the stay with 2 blank pages
C5 declarationFree online form before arrival; avoid sites that charge
CashDeclare USD 10,000 or more on the C5 form
FoodMeat and dairy products may not be brought in
Duty-freeUSD 1,000 of personal goods for arrivals aged 18+
Ganja2 ounces or less: ticket of JMD 500, no criminal record; no public use; no export
WaterTap water described as safe by the tourist board; avoid floodwater in storm-hit areas

Every arrival must make an immigration and customs (C5) declaration, best done online before you land. The form is free; the government has warned about fake sites that charge for it. Its address is given as enterjamaica.gov.jm by the government information service and as enterjamaica.com in an earlier statement by the immigration agency, so make sure you are on a government page.

Cannabis rules are often misunderstood. Since 2015, possessing 2 ounces or less is no longer an arrestable offence and leaves no criminal record, but it is ticketed with a JMD 500 fine, public use is prohibited and visitors may not take cannabis out of the country. UK advice still calls smoking it illegal and warns that other drug offences carry severe penalties. Male same-sex activity remains illegal, and public displays of affection can draw unwanted attention.

Banks and licensed cambios are found in every resort area, rates change daily, and most ATMs take Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Plus cards. After the hurricane, the tourist board asks visitors outside resorts in badly hit parishes to avoid floodwater and to see a doctor promptly for fever.

Mistakes visitors regret in Montego Bay

  1. Booking a Rose Hall resort without checking it has reopened. Seven Hyatt-run properties were not expected back until early 2027.
  2. Paying for the C5 form. The official immigration and customs declaration is free.
  3. Getting into the first car at the airport. Use the JUTA/JCAL authorised taxi desk outside Customs or a JTB-approved transfer, and agree the fare first.
  4. Packing cannabis to take home. Visitors may not export it, whatever the local rules on possession.
  5. Turning up at Rose Hall on a Sunday for the day tour, or at YS Falls on a Monday: both are closed.
  6. Booking non-refundable trips for September or October, the wettest months and the peak of hurricane season.
  7. Driving between towns after dark. The US government bars its own staff from doing so.
  8. Assuming every south-coast stop is back to normal. Confirm Appleton and Black River stops with your operator.
