Practical info

Know before you book

The things that change a decision — not a retelling of the guidebook.

Kotor is a cruise port and it shows

The walled town is small, and a single large ship fills it. Arrivals are published in advance and it is worth a look before you fix the day. If you are staying, the town is yours from about six in the evening.

Dubrovnik to Kotor is a border crossing

Around two to three hours, and the queue at the border is the variable — in August it can add an hour in each direction. Bring a passport, not an ID card, and expect the coach to stop twice.

The fortress climb is 1,350 steps with no shade

The walk up San Giovanni above Kotor is the best view in the country and a serious climb in summer heat. Go at first light or in the last two hours before sunset, and take more water than feels necessary.

The euro is used without EU membership

Montenegro adopted the euro unilaterally, so prices are in a currency you already know while the country remains outside the EU. That matters for borders and roaming, not for your wallet.

The north is a different holiday entirely

Durmitor national park, the Tara canyon and the Đurđevića Tara bridge are three to four hours inland from the coast — rafting, mountains and almost no crowds. Worth two days if you have them, and not a day trip from Budva.

The season is short and August is the peak of it

The coast runs roughly from late May to early October. Budva in August is a party resort at full volume; the same town in late September is quiet and half the price.

When to visit

Montenegro through the seasons

What is open, how busy it gets, and when to book ahead.

Spring
Apr–May
Best for
The bay green and empty, the fortress climb in comfortable air, low prices.
Crowds
Booking tip
Sea is still cold and some coastal businesses have not opened — check ahead.
Summer
Jun–Aug
Best for
Swimming, boat trips around the bay, everything open including the north.
Crowds
Booking tip
August is the crush — border queues, full beaches and the highest prices of the year.
Autumn
Sep–Oct
Best for
Warm sea, the coast returning to itself, rafting on the Tara still running.
Crowds
Booking tip
September is comfortably the best month here on every measure.
Winter
Nov–Mar
Best for
Kotor empty and atmospheric, skiing in the north, very cheap accommodation.
Crowds
Booking tip
Much of the coast closes; the bay is wet rather than cold.
Frequently asked

Montenegro: common questions

How many days do you need in Montenegro?

Three days for the bay — Kotor, Perast and the coast around them. Five if you want Budva and the beaches as well, and a week if you are going north to Durmitor, which is the part most visitors never see.

What does a tour in Montenegro cost?

The country is not in our fifty-city price index, so we will not put a number on it. In practice it sits below Croatia for guiding and boat trips and above Albania, with the cruise-day surcharge visible in Kotor itself.

Can you visit Montenegro as a day trip from Dubrovnik?

It is the most common way people see Kotor, and it works — two to three hours each way with a border crossing in both directions. You get the bay and the old town and nothing else. A night in Kotor is a much better trip if the schedule allows it.

When is the best time to visit?

June and September. July and August are hot and crowded with the longest border queues; May and October are lovely for the bay but thin on the coast. The mountains in the north are a summer proposition.

Kotor or Budva as a base?

Kotor for scenery, history and the fortress; Budva for beaches and nightlife. They are forty minutes apart, so the choice is about what you want in the evening rather than what you can reach in the day.
