Practical info

Know before you book

The things that change a decision — not a retelling of the guidebook.

The Jordan Pass usually pays for itself twice

It bundles Petra with around forty other sites and waives the tourist visa fee entirely if you stay at least three nights. It must be bought online before you arrive — buying it after landing does not waive the visa. For almost any itinerary it is the single best-value decision you can make here.

Amman is the most expensive city in our index

Its median tour is €156 against a global median of €60 — the highest of the fifty cities we measured. Petra’s entry is among the most expensive archaeological tickets in the world and most tours from Amman include it, which is what drives the figure.

Petra needs two days, not one

The Siq alone is a kilometre and a half before the Treasury appears, and the Monastery is eight hundred steps beyond that again. A day gets you the main route at speed; two gets you the high places, the Monastery and a morning before the coaches from Amman arrive.

Petra by Night is a separate thing

It runs three evenings a week — the Siq lit by candles down to the Treasury, with music. It is not included in the Jordan Pass or the day ticket and is sold separately. Whether it is worth it divides opinion; the walk itself is extraordinary.

Wadi Rum gets cold at night in any season

Desert nights drop sharply even after a forty-degree day, and the Bedouin-run camps range from basic tents to glass domes. Take a layer whatever the month — people consistently underpack for this.

Three climates in a small country

Amman sits high and can snow in winter. The Dead Sea is four hundred metres below sea level and ten degrees warmer. Aqaba and Wadi Rum are desert. A single day can move between all three, and your packing has to allow for it.

The best weather of the year, wildflowers, Petra and Wadi Rum at their most comfortable.
Crowds
Booking tip
The peak season — Petra hotels and Wadi Rum camps book well ahead.
Summer
Jun–Aug
Best for
Aqaba and the Red Sea, where you are in the water, and the lowest prices.
Crowds
Booking tip
Petra and the Dead Sea are severe — start at dawn and stop by mid-morning.
Autumn
Sep–Nov
Best for
The second peak: warm days, cool nights, everything running.
Crowds
Booking tip
October is the equal of April and is the better month for the desert camps.
Winter
Dec–Feb
Best for
Petra almost empty, the Dead Sea mild, the lowest rates of the year.
Crowds
Booking tip
Amman can snow and Petra gets cold and occasionally wet — the Siq floods rarely but does.
Frequently asked

Jordan: common questions

How many days do you need in Jordan?

A week: one or two in Amman with Jerash, two at Petra, a night in Wadi Rum and a night at the Dead Sea. Five days is the compressed version and still works if you accept one day at Petra rather than two.

What does a tour in Jordan cost?

Amman sits at a median of €156 in our index of 50 cities — the highest figure in the entire study, against a global median of €60. Almost all of the gap is the Petra ticket and the four-hour drive each way, which most Amman-based tours include.

Is the Jordan Pass worth buying?

For nearly everyone, yes. It covers Petra plus dozens of other sites and cancels the tourist visa fee provided you stay three nights or more and buy it before arriving. The saving is usually larger than the price of a single day at Petra.

When is the best time to visit?

March to May and September to November. Summer is punishing at Petra, the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum; winter is cold in Amman and quiet everywhere, which some people prefer for Petra itself.

How long do you need at Petra?

Two days if you want the Monastery and the High Place of Sacrifice as well as the Treasury and the Royal Tombs. One long day covers the main trail. Either way, be at the gate when it opens — the coach groups from Amman arrive from mid-morning.
