Bali traffic makes kilometres meaningless
Ubud to the southern beaches can take ninety minutes for twenty-five kilometres, and Ubud to the east coast two hours. Everything here is priced as a driver and a day rather than a distance, and an itinerary with four stops in it is an itinerary in a car.
Fast boats stop when the sea is rough
Crossings to the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida are cancelled in heavy swell, most often between December and February, and operators rebook rather than refund. Never put a crossing on the day before a flight home.
Sunrise treks really do start at two in the morning
Mount Batur, Ijen and Bromo pickups run between one and three a.m. They are worth doing and they cost you the following day — plan nothing for it beyond a pool.
Nyepi closes Bali completely
The Balinese day of silence, in March, shuts the airport for twenty-four hours. Nobody goes outside, no tours run, lights stay off. It is a remarkable thing to witness from a hotel and a catastrophe to discover on a connecting flight — check the date first.
Indonesia is not Bali
Borobudur and Prambanan are on Java, Komodo is a flight to Flores, and Sulawesi is further again. The country is thousands of kilometres across. Adding Java to a Bali week means internal flights, not a day trip.
Temple dress is enforced, politely
A sarong and sash at Balinese temples, shoulders covered. They are available at the gate for a small fee and are usually included by tours. Refusing simply means not going in.

How many days do you need in Indonesia?
Ten days for Bali properly — south, Ubud and one of the east coast or the islands. Two weeks if Java or Komodo are in the plan, because both are flights rather than drives. A week in Bali alone works and will feel short by the end.
What does a tour in Indonesia cost?
Ubud sits at a median of €36 in our index of 50 cities, against a global median of €60 — one of the cheapest places in the study. A private driver for a full day here costs less than a two-hour group walk does in much of Europe, which is why private is the default rather than the upgrade.
When is the best time to visit Bali?
April to October is the dry season, with July and August the busiest and most expensive. April to June and September are the sweet spots. The wet season is not a write-off — rain tends to be an afternoon hour — but the sea crossings become unreliable.
Do I need a visa for Indonesia?
Most visitors buy a visa on arrival or apply for the electronic equivalent before travelling, and it is extendable once. The details and the fee have changed more than once in recent years — check the official source for your nationality rather than a blog post.
Should I rent a scooter or hire a driver?
Hire a driver. Scooter accidents are the commonest way visitors ruin a trip here, foreign licences are frequently not valid for them, and travel insurance follows the licence. A car with a driver for a day costs little more than two scooter rentals.
Can you see Borobudur from Bali?
Not as a day trip in any sensible form — it is on Java, about an hour’s flight to Yogyakarta and then a drive. Give it two nights and see Prambanan as well, or leave it for a different trip. The one-day versions sold occasionally are almost entirely transport.
