Know before you book
The things that change a decision — not a retelling of the guidebook.
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays
And it is the thing most first trips are built around. Agra tours still run that day and go to the fort and the Baby Taj instead, which is a fine morning but not the one you came for. Check the day of the week before you fix the train.
Distances look shorter than they drive
Delhi to Agra is about 230 km and three to four hours on the expressway; Agra to Jaipur is about four more. The Golden Triangle is a comfortable week and a brutal three days. Trains beat cars on the Delhi–Agra leg and cars beat trains almost everywhere else.
A car and driver is the normal unit
Most multi-day tours here are a private car with a driver rather than a coach, and that is the sensible way to travel: it costs far less than the equivalent would in Europe, and it removes the part of Indian travel that exhausts first-time visitors.
The monsoon is a season, not a forecast
June to September over most of the country, heaviest on the west coast and in Kerala. Rajasthan and the north are a November-to-March trip; the Himalayan foothills are the summer escape. Planning around the monsoon matters more here than planning around heat.
The e-visa is applied for before you fly
Most nationalities apply online in advance — it is not issued on arrival. Use the official government portal; the lookalike sites charge a multiple of the fee for the identical form and are the commonest way visitors overpay before they even land.
Eat where it is busy, and drink bottled
Street food is one of the reasons to come, and a food tour with a local is the low-risk way into it — guides know which stalls turn over fast enough to be safe. Bottled or filtered water throughout, including for brushing teeth, for the whole trip.

How many days do you need in India?
A week covers the Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur — at a civilised pace. Ten days adds Varanasi or Udaipur. India rewards going slowly and punishes the opposite: two cities properly beats five from a car window, and internal flights eat half-days.
What does a tour in India cost?
New Delhi is the cheapest city in our index of 50, with a median tour of €29 against a global median of €60. A private guide and car for a full day is often less than a group tour costs in Europe, which is why the private option is worth taking here even if you would not normally.
When is the best time to visit?
November to March for the north and Rajasthan — dry, clear and cool enough to walk all day. The monsoon from June to September is the season to plan around rather than ignore: it is when Kerala is at its most beautiful and when Goa is shut.
Is India safe for solo and women travellers?
Large numbers of women travel India independently every year, and the ones who enjoy it tend to plan more tightly than they would elsewhere: arrivals in daylight, pre-booked transfers rather than station taxis, and app-based cabs in cities. Group and private tours with a fixed driver remove most of the friction, which is a large part of why they are so much of this catalogue.
Do I need a visa for India?
Almost certainly yes, and almost certainly online in advance. The e-visa covers tourism for most nationalities and must be approved before you board. Apply on the official government site and allow several days rather than several hours.
Are tours run in English?
Yes — English is a working language across Indian tourism and guides are licensed and examined. This is one of the countries where the guiding is genuinely a reason to book rather than a convenience, particularly at the Mughal sites where almost nothing is labelled.
Which cities should a first trip cover?
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, in that order, with the Taj at sunrise rather than midday. If you have longer and want a second, very different week, take Kerala — backwaters, tea hills and coast — rather than adding more of the north.
