Practical info

Know before you book

The things that change a decision — not a retelling of the guidebook.

Sunday closing is near-total

Shops and supermarkets shut on Sundays across the country, with only station shops and bakeries open. Museums, tours and restaurants run normally. It catches out visitors who planned to buy things on the last day — do that on Saturday.

Neuschwanstein has to be booked, and it is far

Entry is by timed guided slot only, booked ahead, and the castle is two hours from Munich with a climb at the end. This is the single clearest case in Germany for taking the organised day trip rather than assembling it yourself.

Christmas markets run late November to 23 December

Nuremberg, Dresden and Cologne are the famous ones and hotel prices in them roughly double for the period. Almost all close on Christmas Eve itself — a trip arriving on the 24th has missed them.

Cash is still used more than you expect

Germany remains unusually attached to cash: bakeries, small restaurants, market stalls and some museum shops will not take a card. Carry euros, particularly outside Berlin and Munich.

The trains are good and not reliably punctual

Long-distance delays are common enough that locals plan for them. Do not book the last connection of the day before a flight, and do not build a day trip on a single tight change.

Mondays are museum days off

Most of Berlin’s Museum Island and a great many others close on Mondays. It is a good day for a walking tour, a boat or the Reichstag dome — which itself needs registering in advance.

Frequently asked

Germany: common questions

How many days do you need in Germany?

Four days for Berlin, which is a city that rewards time and has the best-value guiding in the country. A week adds Munich and Bavaria, or Hamburg and the north. The trains make almost any two-city combination straightforward.

What does a tour in Germany cost?

Berlin sits at a median of €35 in our index of 50 cities, against a global median of €60 — one of the cheapest cities in the entire study. It is a genuinely unusual market: a large supply of excellent English-speaking guides competing hard.

Do I need to book Neuschwanstein in advance?

Yes. The castle can only be entered on a timed guided tour, tickets are limited and summer dates go weeks ahead. Turning up on the day in season means looking at it from the bridge, which is admittedly the famous view.

When is the best time to visit?

May, June and September for weather and daylight; late November and December if the Christmas markets are the reason you are coming. January and February are cold, cheap and perfectly good for museums and city walking.

Are tours run in English?

Routinely, and in Berlin exceptionally well — free walking tours there effectively invented the format. In smaller towns the English departure is worth confirming rather than assuming.
