Cruise ship days decide Dubrovnik
With three ships in port the walled city is shoulder to shoulder; with none it is delightful. The arrival schedule is published in advance and it is worth checking before you fix the day. Failing that, walk the walls at opening or after five in the afternoon — the ships leave by evening.
Plitvice caps entry and sells out
The lakes use timed tickets with a daily limit, and summer slots go well ahead. The first entry of the day is worth the early start: the boardwalks are one-way and narrow, so a crowd is not something you can walk past.
The coast road is slow, and no longer crosses a border
Split to Dubrovnik is around four hours. It used to involve two border stops through the Bosnian corridor at Neum; the Pelješac bridge now bypasses it entirely, which took an hour of queueing out of every transfer along that coast.
The season is short and it ends abruptly
Many island restaurants, hotels and excursion operators run from May to early October and then close completely. A late-October island trip can mean a working ferry and nothing open at the other end — check that the thing you are going for is running.
Half the Dubrovnik catalogue is Game of Thrones
The filming-location tours are genuinely good walking tours of the old town with a theme attached, and often the best-guided option available. If the series means nothing to you, that is fine — just know what you are booking.
Islands need a timetable, not a plan
Car ferries and fast catamarans run on different routes and different frequencies, and the catamarans are the ones that fill. Hvar and Brač are easy from Split; Korčula and Mljet are easier from Dubrovnik. Island to island is often slower than going back to the mainland.

Croatia: common questions
How many days do you need in Croatia?
A week for the Dalmatian coast: two nights Split, two on an island, two Dubrovnik. Ten days adds Plitvice and Zagreb at the northern end, or Istria, which is a different and quieter trip with better food.
What does a tour in Croatia cost?
Dubrovnik sits at a median of €50 in our index of 50 cities, against a global median of €60 — below the world average despite the reputation. Boat trips and island days are the expensive end; old-town walking tours are among the better value in the Mediterranean.
When is the best time to visit?
June and September. July and August are hot, full and at peak prices, with the old towns at their least pleasant in the middle of the day. May is lovely on the mainland and still half-asleep on the islands.
Can you visit Plitvice as a day trip?
From Zagreb comfortably — about two hours each way. From Split it is a long day at roughly three hours each way, and from Dubrovnik it is not sensible at all. If Plitvice matters, put it on the route between Zagreb and the coast rather than doubling back.
Split or Dubrovnik as a base?
Split for islands and for a working city that exists outside tourism — the ferries go everywhere and it is cheaper. Dubrovnik for the walls, which really are extraordinary, and for a shorter list of day trips at a higher price.
