We took this tour today with Momo, who did a really great job. The tour was very informative with lots of background information about the castle, the garden, and the underlying history. We never would have noticed much of that on our own. The garden is rightly one of the top 3 gardens in Japan. Wonderful design, unusually relaxed even with other tourists. Many good impressions in a short time, without it having felt rushed. Clear recommendation!
We were lucky that Aiko was our guide. A super nice girl who is not only your guide, but also open to answer questions about daily life in Japan. Because it was a private tour, we could fully determine the pace and route. Because it was sweltering hot we chose several stops at tents and shops with air conditioners, ha ha ha. Ask for Aiko when you visit Kanazawa, you won't get a whiff of it.
Our private morning tour with Aiko was amazing. She was so knowledgable about the history of Kanazawa. She even had pictures to illustrate the history for us. She took us to the Myouryuji (Ninja) Temple first thing. The tour turned out to be the highlight of our trip to Kanazawa. The temple is really a disguise for a defense tower used to protect the Feudal Lord of the area at the time. It has multiple hidden traps and escape routes. Even though the tour is given in Japanese, we were given an easy to read tour book to help us follow along with the rest of the group. When we finished the tour, Aiko helped us buy Good Luck Charms from the temple. As we left the temple, Aiko pointed out a rare opportunity to see an elaborate shrine style hearst that was parked near the temple. The wooden hand carved and gold leaf animals and flowers were stunning to see. So happy Aiko pointed it out to us. We then took a short walk to the Nishi Chaya District, one of the historic Geisha areas. We got to check out a traditional tea house and walk past an active Geisha school. This area was a hidden gem, as it is off the beaten path and less crowded. We really enjoyed Aiko's tour, so we booked a follow-on tour with her in order to see the Samurai District and Castle. She's an awesome tour guide and so helpful!
Aiko was a really good guide. She speaks very good englisch and you can understand het very well. She is also a very kind person and really fun to talk to.
