Xunantunich Maya Site

1/2 day is about the right duration for the trip. We saw everything and stopped for a small snack and juice before returning back to base Our guide Eduardo was a lovely man with huge knowledge. A nice touch Highly recommended to see these if in San Ignacio. We even saw a spider money in the trees floating around!!!

We were directed to Belize Caving through our guesthouse & are grateful for the recommendation. Starting off, we arranged a shuttle pickup through them from the airport in Belize City. We ran into some complications & our arrival was delayed by two days, but they generously rescheduled for us without issue. Edgar was our driver. He was very professional and maintained good driving practices while keeping up a fascinating conversation about Maya sites & history. We then requested him for combo tour of Xunantunich/Cave Tubing and were very happy we did so. Edgar has a deep passion & understanding for Maya history & culture and it shows. He also went above and beyond to make sure we got the most out of our experience, offering engagements/explorations with the cave complex that we watched several tour groups pass by. Many of those moments were the highlights of the adventure & I feel bad for the folks who didn't get them. It was greatly appreciated.

Our guide, Eduardo, was knowledgeable. We had plenty of time to visit the site and discuss its history. It was a good experience.

Our excursion was scheduled to begin at 07:30, but unfortunately, our guide did not arrive until 09:00. This significant delay set a poor tone for the day. During the drive, we noticed the driver appeared to be struggling to stay awake, which made the journey quite stressful and concerning for our safety. Once we arrived at the Mayan Ruins, the experience improved. The site was incredible, and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring it. Lunch afterwards was also excellent — the food was delicious and appreciated by everyone in our group. However, another issue arose when one of our family members asked a question, and the tour guide responded by scolding her in a condescending manner, as though she were a child. This was uncalled for and made the experience uncomfortable. The cave tour that followed was another highlight — truly enjoyable and well-organized. Unfortunately, the day ended on another disappointing note. We were aware that the last water taxi back to San Pedro was at 17:30, and we communicated that it was critical for us to make it back in time. The driver assured us that we would — but we arrived at 17:40 and missed the boat. This left us stranded and scrambling to find our own way back, which was stressful and not acceptable for a guided, paid excursion. Given the delays and lack of consideration for our time and safety, we feel the customer service throughout this experience fell short of expectations. We hope this feedback is taken seriously and leads to better planning, communication, and professionalism in the future.

We had the pleasure of Edgar being our guide through Xunantunich & cave Tubing. HE'S ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Very personable, knowledgeable, passionate and full of energy. I could literally feel that he truly loved his culture and took pride in sharing it's treasures with us. - He brought Xunantunich to life, by his storytelling and explaining the architecture, symbolism and spiritual significance . We left feeling awed! - Cave Tubing through the Mayan underworld was also incredible! Edgar shared the rich history & Mayan legends tied to the underworld which gave it a magical feel. We also enjoyed the best lunch experience of our entire trip on the Cave Tubing portion of our adventures! We left with memories we'll cherish forever. And a deeper appreciation for Belize’s culture and natural wonders, all thanks to EDGAR!

Selwyn is an excellent guide. His knowledge of Mayan history and the Xunantunich site made for a very informative tour. The hike and float through the cave was amazing in the hot humid weather. Jumping off the cliff was an added bonus. Pick up was on time which was very much appreciated. This tour was worth every penny.

Beautiful ruins. We learned so much about the Mayan culture from our amazing tour guide. Go early to beat the bigger crude ship tours.

What an amazing tour! We did the Xunantunich ruins with the cave float. Selwyn was so knowledgeable, very friendly and easy to talk to! Extremely knowledgeable about literally any question you have- history, archeology, geology, wild life, etc. You can tell how passionate he is about sharing his knowledge which made the tour both educational and a lot of fun! Highly recommend this experience to anyone coming to Belize!

Our tour guide, Abel, was awesome. He is fairly new to being a tour guide, but we would have never known. He was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. It was just my husband and I on the tour with him so it was a very private and fun experience. Xunantunich is a fantastic site with so many structures to explore. The history and culture is amazing and Belize gov't has done a great job preserving the heritage and structures. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water. We saw lots of wildlife, too!

Marlon was a wonderful guide! He helped blend 2 singles, and a group of 4 into a cohesive and fun group of 6+1 (himself) for a fun day at Xunantunich and Cave Tubing. We all enjoyed the archeological site, with fantastic views from the top of the castle, and the history of this great Mayan site. Driving across Belize, Marlon was very informative and knowlegeable, answering all the questions that were asked about his great country. Lunch was delicious. The trip through the caves was beautiful and delightfully fun. Marlon went out of his way to encourage and help teach a non-swimmer how to float without fear. I think that person had the most fun of all on the float! I give the tour a 5-star rating, and bonus kudos to Marlon!
