It has beautiful wood-carved doors and traditional wall decoration. 🌅 Zanzi Temple Wat Chomphet The hilltop temple was built in 1888 under the auspices of Chaophraya Surasakmontri, a Siamese general stationed in Luang Prabang. It was an important religious site for the royal family and was used for coronation ceremonies. Climbing to the top overlooks the Mekong River and the ancient city. ðŸ� Wat Long Khoun Longkun Temple is also known as Longguang Temple, Longkun Temple and Longkun Temple. Restored between 1791-1815 by King Anurut, this temple was a retreat for members of the Luang Prabang royal family and high monks. On both sides of the entrance to the Temple Gate is preserved a Chinese-style samurai gate god, rumored to have been painted in 1887 during the Black Banner Army period and is a unique mark of the intermingling of Chinese and Lao cultures. Tourists to Luang Prabang are crammed into this side of the ancient city, but for three bucks (10,000 Kip), you can get on a tin ferry and squeeze onto a motorcycle-laden ferry and follow local residents across the Mekong. After 5 minutes, cut into a completely different Laotian country world. A few minutes' walk ashore, the village entrance sees Old House Cafe, a two-story wooden house wrapped in tropical greenery. Hand-painted colored signs say coffee, bamboo, hiking, and it is the only place in Shanman village to stay. 🏡 The old house itself is worth crossing the Mekong River Rustic country vibe: Native woodwork, Lao flags and vintage wooden carvings adorn the sliding door with handmade bamboo pendants and folk cloth drapery. The walls are painted with Naga, elephants and gods and beasts in just the right way. Second-floor healing moment: Find a window seat on the second floor, hollowed out wrought iron wooden windows framed by green eyes and occasionally a few chicken noises. Sleepy and nap, wake up still full of green eyes, don't have to catch a trip, time really slows down here. Plain home-cooked and handiwork: local knitting and bamboo trinkets are on display on the ground floor, craftsmen in the corner quietly sewing fabric as you look at her and time passes. I had a truly enjoyable experience on this tour. Even though I skipped the more challenging section because of knee issues, the forest walk was gentle and very manageable, with a gradual incline leading up to the temple sites. The brick-paved paths made walking easy, and passing through the small villages along the way was a highlight. Our guide shared so much about village life—plants, food, daily activities, and the local approach to education—which really brought the surroundings to life. The cultural insight was fascinating. I learned about the structure of Buddhist monasteries, the training of monks and novices, and the ways villagers support and maintain the temples. Visiting unique temples and hearing the history of the three different tribes in the region—lowland, midland, and highland—added depth and context that made the walk far more than just a scenic outing. A memorable part of the day was taking a longboat to the middle of the Mekong River for a fresh, grilled fish lunch. Along the way, we learned about local fishing techniques, the river’s importance, and how these practices sustain families. Our guide also explained how villagers are developing crafts to support economic growth, which gave a sense of the community’s resilience and creativity. It was an engaging, thoughtful tour that left me with a real appreciation for both the landscape and the people.

My guide came to pick me up from my hotel before 9 am and I was back in Luang Prabang city before 1 pm. We then traveled to the jetty to take the boat to Chompet and started the trek. The highlights of this trip were the secret cave and buddhas in the jungle. We also did a spot of fishing where we caught a catfish (apparently I was lucky since the fisherman didn't catch any during the last 3 tours). We ended the trek with a delicious lunch at Lao Old House where I had Lao noodles and fried fish. I enjoyed this trip as the area was quiet and not crowded with tourists. My guide was Malaysian Chinese and spoke English, Mandarin and Laos, and was very knowledgeable and obliging. I recommend this to anyone interested in exploring places off the beaten track.
