Alexander Troubetzkoy was a Russian prince. He arrived here in Como in 1850 fleeing Russia because he was an enemy of the Tsar. He decided to build his house in this position right on the shore and, to do so, completely destroyed the cliff using mines. People gave him the nickname of the cliff destroyer. It is now a special 5-star hotel stars for special events
Cademartori is the name of one of the most important Italian families, owner of a famous Italian food company. This family has used the Villa as a holiday residence for a long time.

Villa d’Este is a splendid 5-star hotel, one of the best in Italy. At the end of the sixteenth century, in the area where the Villa stands today, Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio had a private residence built called Villa del Garovo, after the river that flows nearby. In 1815 it became the residence of Caroline Amalia of Brunswick, Princess of Wales, and was renamed New Villa d’Este in tribute to the alleged Este origins of the princess. At the end of the nineteenth century it was converted into a hotel.
Villa Erba was built in 1800 and was the home of the Visconti family of Modrone. It is famous because here lived and spent his childhood the director Luchino Visconti, one of the most important directors Italians. Today Villa Erba is a very important congress and exhibition center, used for events international, fashion shows and luxury weddings.
