Baby Humpback Encounter

Whale watching with Sebastian and Lucas was a surreal experience. The seas were rough but we always felt safe with this team. The two worked together to give us the best experience possible. We had a long encounter with a baby humpback with its mother below in the shadows.

First experience swimming with whales ruined by rude guide with anger issues

We went on three whale tours in Moorea with three different companies. Our first was with Mori Ora and it was extremely disappointing compared to the others. We chose Mori Ora because of the great reviews about the guide Doris, but when we arrived we had a French male guide and he was by far the worst guide we encountered. He really spoiled our first time swimming with humpback whales. He was rude and condescending, and we spent most of the trip trying not to upset him instead of enjoying the experience. Since it was our first whale tour we didn’t know what to expect and felt like we couldn’t do anything right. After our second tour with a different guide and company, we realized the issue had been that first guide. Our second guide was incredibly enthusiastic and positive. Whenever someone in the group fell behind or got distracted (which made the first guide really angry), this second guide would cheer them on, saying things like “Faster, faster! You can do it” or “Get closer! I won’t bite. It’s gonna be awesome!” He was so funny and cheerful and full of joy. It was contagious! We all had a blast that trip even though we actually had less time overall with the whales than the first trip with Mori Ora. The Mori Ora guide, on the other hand, yelled and made you feel bad for not being right behind him at all times even when he moved around and we were constantly focused on not angering him. One time, my husband and I were behind him to the right, with my husband to my right, and then this guide quickly changed direction and started swimming to the right, so suddenly we were in front of him, with my husband ahead of me. We stayed put to let him get back in front, but instead he started yelling at my husband and told him he was “disrespecting the whales” by not listening to him to be behind him. Hey buddy, you just changed directions without warning. What were we supposed to do? Teleport behind you? Get some anger management help mate. When he dove under to check on the whales and was out of earshot, someone else in the group asked my husband if he was okay and called the guide melodramatic. So, it wasn’t just us feeling uncomfortable with his hostility. It was a really weird and uncomfortable experience. Our third guide, from yet another company, was very sweet and much quieter than the second guide, but she was super knowledgeable about the whales and taught us a lot of things we hadn’t heard on the other two trips. In the water, she kept checking on us by putting her head all the way down while still swimming forward super fast, doing that every few seconds, so we felt really well taken care of. She barely got to enjoy the whales herself (mother and calf!) because she was constantly checking on all of us. She was so nice and I felt I could relax and enjoy watching the playful baby whale because I knew I had an expert guide looking after us. None of this happened with Mori Ora. The only positive about Mori Ora was the Tahitian captain, who was very nice. Maybe Doris is very nice too, but we never met her. The male guide from this company, however, should stick to “sailing at sunset” trips or something because there are MUCH BETTER whale guides than him in Moorea!

Simply spectacular

After more than 2 hours looking for the whales, we went to an area with a lot of swell and we were able to see 7 whales swimming together! The experience of swimming with them is impressive, and the guide Jay is undoubtedly the best. Mauruuru

Very cool, we saw 4 whales up close. Tour guide took his time/patience to find the whales and get us closer to them. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Unforgettable whale breach!

Unforgettable whale breach! Warm welcome, fascinating explanations, and a thrilling water entry! Incredible memories with this juvenile that breached right in front of us while we were in the water. Attentive crew, you can feel their passion for the job, conveyed with all the safety instructions as much for us as for the site and especially for the whales.

Experience of a lifetime

I thought it was just an expression to have one's breath taken away, but after being face to face with a humpback whale in the blue open ocean, I know what it is. Sebastien was an incredible guide and I cannot recommend this experience enough. Mind blown.

Operator response

Pilot whales and oceanic white tip sharks!

Doris was our guide for our whale tour in early August (pardon me for not remembering our boat captain's name - he was also great!) We did the afternoon tour, and while we did see some humpbacks, we were not able to get in the water with them due to their movement and not the right conditions. We did, however, have an opportunity to see a pod of pilot whales and some oceanic white tip sharks that were hanging out near the pilot whales. That was just as awesome! Even though we weren't able to swim with the pilot whales, it was an amazing experience to see the pilot whales and oceanic sharks from above! Doris was very informative and friendly, and we would book again in a heartbeat!

Operator response

'Ia ora na, Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a review and for your understanding. Nature is unpredictable and we do our best to respect whales when are not in the mood to welcome us in the water. Hope to see you on board another time :) JP
