Ga Hiti, in the heart of Thamel, is an ancient stone water spout system with historical and cultural significance. Built during the Lichhavi period, it reflects the traditional Newar water management system, where intricately carved spouts provided clean water to the community.
Surrounded by local shops and bustling streets, Ga Hiti stands as a quiet reminder of Kathmandu's rich heritage amidst Thamel’s modern vibrancy.
We’ll then stop at Gunakar Mahavihar, another historic Buddhist monastery and continue to the Shree Gha Stupa, also known as the "Mini Swayambhunath," a stunning smaller replica of the famed Monkey Temple. Surrounded by prayer wheels and fluttering flags, this serene site offers a fitting conclusion to our journey.
On the way to visit these ancient heritages, we will also experience the modern tourist downtown of Thamel, with its lively streets, vibrant shops, cafes, and unique cultural blend.

Tham Bahi, also known as Bhagwan Bahal, is a historic Buddhist monastery located in the bustling heart of Thamel. This serene site is an active place of worship for local Buddhists and holds deep cultural and religious significance.
Interestingly, Tham Bahi is the namesake of Thamel; over time, "Tham Bahi" evolved into "Thamel," giving the area its iconic name. The courtyard of the monastery is adorned with intricately carved stone statues, prayer wheels, and stupas, reflecting traditional Newar craftsmanship. Despite being surrounded by Thamel’s lively streets, the monastery offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can experience the spiritual essence of Kathmandu's heritage.

10/10 Would Come Back Again
These guys are awesome!! I went solo travelling for the first time and Santosh was my guide. He showed me around Thamel and told me about the culture. It was great because I had no idea what was happening when I was by myself - I did not know what I was looking at most of the time. It was super enlightening to learn about the culture, structures and people. He took me around the city through some courtyards, into some temples and other buildings.
These are some photos of Thamel. I retraced my route to take these photos but Santosh is really patient if you’d like to take photos during the tour. Excuse the unedited photos… I have not had time to edit them.
Thanks Santosh!

Santosh is extremely nice...
Santosh is extremely nice and knowledgeable and easily modified the itinerary more to what we were looking for. He really went out of his way for us. When it started raining he gave us his umbrella and helped us get a cab home. Then he realized he was holding a bottle I purchased and delivered it to my hotel even though it wasnt necessary but truly one of the nicest things any guide has ever done for us
Operator response
Namaste Leonid and thanks for your review. The forgotten bottle delivery made us smile, that is Santosh! A tour should feel personal, flexible and looked after from start to finish, even when Kathmandu adds some rain to the adventure.
Please share your Nepal experience with friends and family, we'd love to welcome them here.
Cheers,
Menno
