During the historical venetian carnival, the atmosphere played a huge role: thousands of musicians, performers, and jugglers filled the streets, spreading the joyous and playful intentions of the holiday. Small and big piazzas became real theatre stages: IL Volo d'Angelo (The Flight of the Angel) was a ceremony which consisted in a performance of a trained acrobat, disguised as an angel, who would descend from the historic St. Mark's bell tower, to the square itself, transforming the center of the city into a fascinating stage itself.

During the Carnival we also have one day which called "Volo dell'Angelo" (The "Flight of the Angel") On this day in Piazza San Marco—the Volo dell'Angelo (Flight of the Angel)—began in the 1500s when a young Turkish acrobat walked on a tightrope attached from a boat in the basin all the way to the top of the Campanile bell tower. After a tragic fall in 1759, the live acrobat was replaced by a wooden dove (Volo della Colombina) for centuries, before returning to a human "angel" in modern times.
