Velika Planina Guided Hike from Ljubljana

What a relaxing trip up into this truly beautiful part of Slovenia. We were lucky we just got in with a few cows still grazing lazily on the plateau. The drive up was also picturesque. Thanks Matt for your time it was great to have a guide with a good sense of humour.

nice moderate hike with beautiful surroundings….and good guide ….got to know a lot about Slovenia

Our tour was canceled the day before departure due to bad weather, according to the organizer. We were offered an alternative tour — one we had already taken. We were very disappointed because it was our last day in Slovenia. We ended up going on our own that day, and I have to say that, FORTUNATELY, the tour with To Do In Slovenia was canceled. The weather was fine, and the trip to Velika Planina cost us 48 euros per person, including round-trip transportation to and from Ljubljana, a round-trip ride on the cable car and chairlift (30 euros per person — a great attraction with amazing views!), and a cheese tasting. This tour agency charges 75 euros per person for the transfer and a guided tour. I don’t think a guide is necessary. Moreover, it’s much more interesting to take the cable car up to Velika Planina and have time to explore there — we spent almost 4 hours on the mountain instead of just 1, as with the agency. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this agency.

It was a fabulous morning out. The hike itself was moderate difficulty and enjoyable. Lan (our guide) was great - very informative but also friendly and approachable - great engagement. Views were spectacular and seeing the cows was a highlight for us.

Great day trip from Ljubljana! Velika Planina was a perfect getaway from the city. Beautiful views of the valleys and mountains. While this is a very popular destination for both tourists and locals, it never felt crowded. The drive is about 1.5 hours from Ljubljana, with the last 20 minutes on a windy mountain road. The hike begins with a 15-20 minute moderate climb to get to the planina. Once on the planina, it’s an easy hike with moderate uphill and downhill sections. We stopped at a cottage cafe for refreshments before heading back down. Maya was an excellent guide, sharing lots of knowledge about Slovenia and the local area. We loved learning about the history of Slovenia from her.

Blown away by the beauty and serene views on this tour. Our guide, Lan, was one of the best guides I’ve ever experienced - fun, upbeat, incredibly knowledgeable and so willing to share experiences and information. This tour was THE highlight of my four day trip in Slovenia.

Incredible! Velika Planina is an unique and peaceful place surrounded by mountains. The cows were out at pasture and the fields were filled with flowers. We had the luck to try a 300 year old cake recipe, taste some amazing local cheese, and eat Štruklji for lunch. Our guides were very nice people, knowledgeable, and proud of the Slovenian culture. They made the experience even better. We left at 7h30 and were back in Ljubljana by 13h30. For us, the hike was easy, even in the steeper parts. We'll return in the future

It was wonderful. There were 3 of us and our guide. Hiking through the forest with the trees turning color was amazing. Just a few other hikers were encountered. Once out of the trees, we were on the plateau. The view with the huts was very scenic, as were the nearby mountains. It felt great to be hiking. The cattle were no longer pasturing there as the season had ended. We hiked to a hut/ cafe and snacked for a bit before continuing. It ended too soon. A great trip for getting outdoors and hiking for a few hours. The hike up is a bit steep, but no problem if you take your time.

There was really dense fog on the plateau when we arrived, so it was quite different from the photos you see. However, it was kind of magical, and a totally new experience to me. By noon the fog had cleared a lot, but then it was time to start our descent. Maybe the tour should start later during foggy seasons, so that the sun would clear at least most of the fog? Our guide, a young man, hadn’t done his homework. He thought there would still be cows up on the plateau, but they had been already taken down to the valley. He also planned to have lunch in a restaurant, but it was closed for the season. (Also the museum, chapel and even the outdoor privies were closed.) He said we’d have a coffee later, as we could not go to the restaurant. One person in our group needed to go to the bathroom. When we were in the van, the guide said we’d stop at a petrol station, but there weren’t any nearby. When we drove through the town of Kamnik, I asked if we could have our coffee there. The guide said he would stop at a petrol station, as he was in a hurry, having another group in the afternoon. We had our first toilet break at 1 pm., having started the tour at 8 am. We were told we could get take-away coffees. The place didn’t sell even chocolate. We arrived in Ljubljana at 1.40 pm., 20 minutes ahead of time. The day before, we had been on another tour. At one stop, we managed to enjoy coffee in an outdoor cafe, go to the loo and even take pictures of a beautiful lake - all in 30 minutes.
