Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, in Sri Lanka. The national park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. The reserve covers 30,821 hectares (119.00 sq mi) of land area and was established on 30 June 1972. Before the designation of the national park, the area was used for shifting cultivation (chena farming). The farmers were gradually removed once the national park was declared. The park is 165 kilometres (103 mi) from Colombo. Udawalawe is an important habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan elephants. It is a popular tourist destination and the third most visited park in the country.

Admission included30 min

The Udawalawe Elephant Transfer Home is a facility within Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka that was established in 1995 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. Its primary objective is to rehabilitate orphaned elephant calves for ultimate release back into the wild.

Superb

Our safari experience with this agency was truly unforgettable. They organized every detail of our trip to Yala and Udawalawe with great care, from logistics to timing, ensuring we could enjoy the parks at their best and still have time to rest and enjoy Sri Lanka’s cuisine in between. The highlight of the journey was undoubtedly our guide Bale. His deep knowledge of wildlife and ecosystems, combined with his sharp eye for spotting animals, made the adventure both exciting and educational. Thanks to Bale, we were able to see incredible species up close and understand their natural behavior. Beyond his expertise, his warmth and professionalism made us feel safe and welcome throughout. I wholeheartedly recommend this agency: excellent organization, genuine hospitality, and an outstanding guide like Bale turn a safari into a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience

Wonderful Tour in Udawalawa park

Timely picked up in our accommodation in Bentota. We had a fantastic guide Pathum. He was well knowledgeable about the park and it's animals. The picnic pack was also nice. End of the tour we were safely back to our accommodation. Highly recommended.

Tour provider did not provide what we purchased

We purchased this package which was to include a 3-hour safari and a visit to the Elephant Transit Home, breakfast, water, park entrance fees and RT transportation from Galle for 190 USD per person. We received a 2 hour safari, no visit to the Elephant Transit Home, a 4.25 hour ride to the park starting at 4 am with no bathroom break, (sat in vehicle for 45 minutes waiting for participants to arrive so we were late getting to park), and it was almost 7 hours into the experience before we were offered water. After reaching out to the tour provider as we were driven back 3 hours to our hotel we were offered USD 6 refund to compensate for not visiting the ETH. I had to politely refuse to get out of the vehicle when returned to my hotel to force the tour provider to refund 40% of the fee back to me. I did receive the refund, and everyone messes up sometimes, but when you do mess up you immediately apologize and offer to make it right. The tour company made me work to get a refund.

Memories that will last a lifetime

We booked through a guy on the beach at our hotel (Pandanus) it was half the price of our travel operator and we like to give back to the locals. What a day we had here. Whilst I appreciate this can be hit and miss with animals in the wild. We had a spectacular experience with a baby elephant stopping and putting his trunk in our jeep and touching us and allowing us to stroke him. Memories to last a lifetime.
