Try Mindful Calligraphy Near Kanazawa's Ninja Temple

An incredible cultural experience in Kanazawa. During our trip through Japan we had the opportunity to do a Japanese calligraphy (Shodō) activity and learn to write different kanji. The experience was much more than simply learning to write: they explained the meaning of the characters, the technique, and the importance of each stroke within Japanese culture. The atmosphere was very pleasant and we were able to enjoy a traditional and authentic activity, something we especially recommend if you are looking for what to do in Kanazawa and want to know a different part of Japanese culture. Also, being able to take our own calligraphy home as a souvenir made the experience even more special. Without a doubt, one of the cultural activities we enjoyed the most in Kanazawa. Highly recommended if you visit the city and want to have a different Japanese experience!

While planning my trip to Kanazawa, I stumbled upon a calligraphy experience, and it looked fun so I booked and tried it. The atmosphere was wonderful, and I lost track of time because it was so enjoyable! The experience started with basic dot and stroke writing practice, and then after choosing a desired word, we would copy a sample written by the teacher, practice it several times, and finally write it on a scroll or fan, finishing by writing our names with a small brush. Of course, you can take the finished work! I went in having forgotten almost everything I learned in elementary school art class about calligraphy, but they explained things in detail (and the English explanations were very good, perhaps because it's popular in the West), and they kept praising me even when I wasn't good, so I could do it happily. Both teachers were so kind, and since I'm the first Korean, they even wrote a gift in Hangul, which was so touching... I was so surprised because they wrote so well that I thought a Korean calligrapher had written it. I thought professionals are different. I don't usually write reviews, but the homey atmosphere of the calligraphy academy was wonderful, and I feel like I made some really pleasant memories in many ways, so I'm leaving this note with a grateful heart! It was really fun.Thank you!

We just came from the workshop, which lasted a little over 1 hour. Unreserved recommendation. Materials top-notch, learning sheets top-notch, a new photo at the end; it is simply fun and brings you down from the hectic hustle and bustle. Our 9-year-old daughter also got along great and proudly designed a banner. (Alternatively fans, but that is much more difficult because of the folds.)

This calygraphy course was a perfect experience with our family. Even our sons (aged 18 and 13) enjoyed it very much. It was both knowledgeable and fun to do. Time flew by! Highly recommended

Naomi was very kind as she introduced the basics of calligraphy to us. There were practice sheets for basic strokes and then we practiced the strokes to form the character we chose to put on our fans. Nice build up to the final product. I have a greater appreciation now for the art after having tried it.

Excellent instruction. Approachable activity even for non artists! Cool to try something integral to Japanese culture.

Very hands-on / fun teaching!

This was a lovely morning. Out calligraphy master (Daiko ? ) was so nice and patient. They helped us create beautiful take home memories. We did not feel rushed and we had feedback also to improve our brush strokes.
