Description

Access and Logistics: The castles are scattered across isolated desert roads. A tour provides seamless, air-conditioned private transportation from Amman, handling the challenging driving and navigation between sites like the UNESCO-listed Qusayr 'Amra, the imposing Qasr al-Kharana, and the black basalt Qasr al-Azraq. Expert Insight: The castles' various functions—as hunting lodges, caravanserais, and bathhouses—are often unclear without context. A knowledgeable driver or guide brings the history to life, explaining the rare 8th-century frescoes in Qasr 'Amra and the strategic role of T.E. Lawrence at Qasr al-Azraq. Efficiency: A tour allows you to efficiently complete the entire "Desert Castles Loop," often including an optional stop at the Azraq Wetland Reserve, all within a single, stress-free day trip from the capital.

Begin your unforgettable adventure with a convenient pickup directly from your accommodation in Amman. From there, embark on a captivating journey that will transport you through the ancient and breathtaking desert landscapes of Jordan, unveiling its rich history and timeless beauty.

Quseir Amra
Admission not included35 min
Qasr Al-Harranah
Admission not included35 min

Your next stop is Qasr Al-Harranah, an imposing and well-preserved two-story structure. Often considered the quintessential “desert castle” due to its fortress-like exterior, its actual purpose remains a subject of debate. However, it was likely a caravanserai or a rural meeting hall. Inside, its austere facade gives way to an interior adorned with geometric patterns.

Admission not included60 min

Your final stop is Qasr al-Azraq, a fortress built primarily from local black basalt stone. Originally a Roman fort, it was later rebuilt by the Mamluks. Its modern historical significance stems from serving as T.E. Lawrence’s (Lawrence of Arabia) headquarters during the Arab Revolt (1917–1918). The fort is situated near the Azraq Wetland Reserve, managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN). This reserve is a vital habitat on the African-Eurasian migratory bird flyway, supporting hundreds of species, including the rare endemic Azraq Killifish. The name “Azraq,” meaning “blue,” refers to the extensive body of water that once existed in this area.

As your comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle turns back toward Amman, take a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey we’ve completed through the Eastern Desert. From the unique elegance and controversial frescoes of Qusayr ‘Amra—a true masterpiece of early Islamic art—to the stark, imposing architecture of the massive Qasr Al-Harranah, and finally, the historic black basalt fortress of Qasr al-Azraq, which once served as Lawrence of Arabia’s winter headquarters. You haven’t just seen ancient stones; you’ve witnessed the leisure, power, and art of the Umayyad caliphs. We trust you enjoyed this unique glimpse into Jordan’s past, and we look forward to welcoming you on your next adventure. Safe travels back to Amman!

Azraq Wetland Reserve
Admission not included120 min

The Azraq Wetland Reserve is a unique desert oasis located in the heart of Jordan's eastern desert. Managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), this site is a critical habitat on the African-Eurasian migratory bird flyway, hosting hundreds of species, as well as the rare endemic Azraq Killifish. The name Azraq means "blue," referring to the vast body of water that historically existed here. Once a sprawling natural wetland, the oasis suffered an ecological collapse due to severe water depletion. Today, the reserve is sustained through an intensive restoration effort, thanks to pumped water. Visitors can explore the area via the 1.5 km boardwalk trail, utilize bird hides, and visit the nearby historic Azraq Castle. It stands as a powerful symbol of conservation in an arid environment.

Desert castles and wetlands reserve

Visiting three castles/forts in the middle of the desert gives visitors a sense of the geographical challenges those who came before us encountered, especially when you figure out you are very close to the borders of Iraq and Saudi Arabia. A deep appreciation for the building and paintings of these structures is understood. A little more information inside each building would have been appreciated. As for the wetlands reserve, no animals could be seen. One or two birds flew overhead, but that was all. It would have been nice to know the best season for visiting this preserve, supposedly it is springtime. There was good information inside this center before visitors made their way outside to look for the animals and birds identified .

Operator response

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback on the Desert Castles & Azraq Wetland Reserve tour. We are so glad to hear that visiting the three castles gave you a deep appreciation for the geographical challenges of the past, and we agree that these historical structures and their paintings are truly remarkable. We take your comment about the need for more information inside each building seriously and will review our itinerary and coordination with site guides to see how we can enhance the historical context provided during the tour. Regarding the Azraq Wetland Reserve, we understand your disappointment about not seeing much wildlife. You are absolutely right that springtime (March to May) is indeed the best season for birdwatching and seeing the area at its most vibrant. We will ensure this key seasonal information is highlighted more clearly to guests both at the time of booking and by the driver/guide on the day of the tour. We appreciate you choosing us and hope you found the experience overall valuable!

Not a Tour

The information regarding this tour is misleading. It is not a tour, but rather it consists of a driver who transports you to the sites. He did not provide us w knowledge of the region or the sites. You would be better off simply hiring a driver that can be arranged by your hotel and is less costly.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. Your feedback helps us to improve our services.

Driver only who didn’t know where he was going

Driver was nice and on time. However, he had never been to either the desert castles or the wetland reserve. In fact, he got lost and we were making circles in back streets in some small town off the highway. He had no water do he had to stop to buy some. And he offered no additional information on where we were going.

Desert Castles and Wetland Reserve Day Tour

Amazing day tour! My driver Younes was the very best! Prompt pick up, offered me delicious Turkish coffee, gave interesting facts about the history and local life in Jordan, explained the day’s schedule well, played Arabic music and took photos for me! The Desert Castles were a sight to see! The Wetland Reserve had nice trails that anybody can enjoy! It was great experiencing so much in a day. I really had the best time in Jordan with Younes and this company. Thank you!

Wonderful day in the Eastern Desert

Alaa was a wonderful driver. Everything went smoothly and the car was very comfortable. He was very flexible and did the tour in reverse order for us. We started in the Wetlands which were beautiful.after driving through the desert it was amazing to arrive at a place filled with water and vegetation. You walk along a well maintained boardwalk and trail through the wetlands and there is a large comfortable hide to sit and view birds. It is a peaceful place filled with bird song. The entrance fee was 6JD. Next we visited three sites, which for some reason are called ‘The Castles’. The first Quasr Al Azraq was a large fort. Then we went to see the Frescos at the baths of Qusayr Amra, a World Heritage Site. The third Qasr Kharana (another World Heritage Site) was an enormous hunting lodge with stables, courtyard and 60 bedrooms. All three were on the Jordan pass. Alaa took us into each venue to make sure we were comfortable and that there were no problems. He was waiting to greet us when we were done. We had plenty of time at each site. It could not have been easier.
