The construction of the various wings of Palazzo Colonna lasted for five centuries and this led to the overlap of different architectural styles, both exterior and interior, that characterize it and reflect the different epochs of belonging.
From 1300 to 1500 it presented itself as a real family fortress. Oddone Colonna, elected pope on 11 November 1417 and assumed the name of Martin V, destines the Palace to the Pontifical See and lives there from 1420 to 1431, the year of his death.
In the austere halls of Palazzo Colonna, Pope Martino V plans and realizes in ten years a great plan of cultural, urban and administrative renaissance of the city of Rome, which lay in ruinous condition after the tormented period of the captivity of Avignon and of the Western schism. In 1527, during the sack of Rome by the troops of the Emperor Carlo V, Palazzo Colonna is one of the few buildings that are not burnt thanks to the good relations of the family with the Empire...

Lorenzo was a great guide to the Palace. I would go back, in October!
Beautiful palace with a smaller collection of art work spanning several centuries and styles. Lorenzo was a fantastic guide, providing history and insight. He was also very patient with our limitations. Be aware that like the Vatican, this palace is not air conditioned. They offer umbrellas for walking the gardens, and some windows are open, but it is still very hot in August.

Very special tour
Very few people know about this palace that is only open 2 days a week and definitely worth seeing
Our guide Lorenzo was very knowledgeable and gave a great tour of the palace and outside gardens
He taught us about the history of the Colonna family and showed us very interesting art work

Fascinating Tour
The interplay of art, politics and history makes this a fascinating tour. We were fortunate to have Rebecca as a guide, who did very well putting all the facets in context, making for a most enjoyable morning .

Galleria Colonna
We booked a guided tour through Colonna Palace website. The palace is in amazing condition thanks to the heirs who did a great job of maintaining it. Our guide was Frederica and she was delightful, very knowledgeable and insightful. Highly recommend booking a tour with her.

Palazzo Museum Colonna Tour
We had a private tour organised by our hotel of The Gallery, private apartments and gardens of the Palazzo. Our tour English tour guide was called Rebecca Harden and was without doubt the best guide we have ever encountered. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about the history of not only the paintings but the context of their importance in the history of Rome. A truly vivacious and inspiring tour would highly recommend her.

Worth the cost
