St. Paul Historic Cave Tour

Description
See the only remaining restored Gangster Era site on this historic tour of extensive caves carved into the hillside in long-abandoned mining ventures in the 1800s. Later it was a mushroom farm, and it was then developed into a restaurant casino and gangsters' hotspot during the 1930s prohibition era. Newspapers reported an unsolved gangland murder at the casino. Tour guides point out the bullet holes. Some believe the caves are haunted by the murdered mobsters whose bodies were never found. The original bar from the 30s has been fully restored - it was a then-record at 60 feet long. Though this tour is appropriate for all ages, we recommend ages 5 and up, due to shorter attention spans and restlessness.

It is not what you expect. It is very historical. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, animated and interactive. The tour is designed for the young and old.
We enjoyed the tour. Not a ton of real estate to see but the stories were awesome! The tour guide Ryan made the tour! The joy he has for the caves, stories, and history was contagious.
Mary made the tour very entertaining and I love how they provide a lot of info into a reasonable timeframe. Cost super reasonable too. We enjoyed it alot
Tour guide Lois made the experience worthwhile. Very upbeat. Lots of interesting information. Perfect amount of time for the tour. Perfect for all ages!
The guide Ryan was amazing! He was knowledgeable, friendly, and very, very, funny. He made the whole experience just fantastic. This is a tour you shouldn't miss!
Easy, fun your for family or friends! Mary made the difference; she was funny, clever and full of information!
Great experience was very interesting. Can be little chilly in caves so bring a light jacket, but overall was great
I can't believe I haven't done this sooner. I'm a local and have been wanting to check out the Wabasha Street Caves for a decade now. We interested our out of state company in going. This was a PERFECT place to go on a hot summer day. It's cooler in the caves, but not cold. It felt good during 90 degree heat waves. So first let me say Lois was an AMAZING tour guide. Give her a raise! Be ready for a cash tip at the end for her, because she is worth it. The website says the tour is about 45 minutes to an hour long. I would say this is pretty accurate. I was a little concerned, because I have back pain and can't stand that long. Good news is you only stand for about half that time. You are ushered through the different rooms where in several rooms, the banquet rooms, you sit for a while and listen to a great story by the guide. Then you are ushered into the unfinished portions. The outside of the caves are pretty bare bones and could use some repairs, but don't let that sway you from it's rich history inside. I recommend this to anyone who is interested even slightly in history or is curious what hides in the bluffs along the Mississippi River. I will be bringing ALL of my guests here in the future. Well worth it!
Excellent experience! Even having lived in the area for 10+ years, it was a super interesting, worthwhile experience! Your guide Mary was phenomenal!
