Piazza Tasso is a central place and square in Sorrento in the south of Italy. The square is named after the poet Torquato Tasso. On the square stands a statue of S. Antonino Abbate, the saint patron of the city.
Vallone dei Mulini (known in English as Valley of the Mills) is a historic valley in Sorrento, Italy. The flour mills, built from stone as far back as the 13th century. Its name derived from its beginning function: to grind grain. The valley originates from the release of waters into a tufa plain about 37,000 years ago, following the eruption of the Campi Flegrei. It was in operation until the beginning of the tenth century. In 1866, Piazza Tasso was established, and it caused the mill and the surrounding sea to be isolated. The building was closed and abandoned in the 1940s.
Walk along the main street, Corso Italia.
You will visit the Cathedral of Sorrento (Santi Filippo e Giacomo), a hidden gem located just off the bustling Corso Italia. Originally built in the 11th century and reconstructed in the 15th century, the Cathedral is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. While its exterior features a beautiful Neo-Gothic facade added in 1924, the interior houses precious Baroque decorations, exquisite local marquetry (intarsia), and a font where the famous poet Torquato Tasso was baptized.
Sorrento’s Cloister of San Francesco is an oasis of tranquility steps away from the historic town’s bustling central piazza of Sant’Antonino. Built on the remains of a 7th century monastery and dating back to the 14th century has a unique architecture. The cloister unites a religious complex of the seventh-century monastery and a late-medieval church, both dedicated to St Francis of Assisi and is a showpiece of various architectural styles from pre-Roman through Arabic to medieval. Spot the columns, each one differently decorated from one another and admire the majestic pepper tree, which stands superbly in the middle.
Villa Comunale is a stunning property which stands on the gardens of the Franciscan friars. The Villa has a beautiful park of palm trees, holm, oaks, and century-old pines overlooking the sea. You could take breathtaking picture of the Gulf dominated by the Volcano Vesuvius.
At the end of the visit, you will explore Marina Grande, Sorrento’s most authentic and picturesque fishing village. Separated from the main town by a dramatic stone gateway built by the Greeks, this historic harbor feels like a step back in time. While the rest of Sorrento developed into a sophisticated tourist hub, Marina Grande has preserved its traditional charm with colorful wooden boats, pastel-colored houses, and nets drying in the sun. Today, it is famous for its vibrant atmosphere and family-run restaurants that serve some of the best fresh seafood in the region. It also served as the iconic filming location for the 1954 movie Scandal in Sorrento, starring Sophia Loren.

Our family had an absolutely amazing day with Marialuisa. She spent the entire day with us, taking us by ferry to the Blue Grotto, Capri, and Anacapri, and we truly couldn’t have navigated the day without her. She knew every nook and cranny of the island and all the little insider tips that made our experience so much better. From getting us to where we needed to be efficiently to sharing local knowledge and recommendations, everything felt effortless because of her. She was warm, personable, and even took beautiful family photos. At the end of the day, when the taxi lines were incredibly long, she quickly found us a cab so we could get back without the long wait. It was just one more example of how she went above and beyond. If you’re visiting Capri, the Blue Grotto, or Anacapri, I can’t recommend her highly enough. She made what could have been a stressful day of logistics into a relaxed, unforgettable experience.
