Itinerary
San Miguel volcano (also known locally as Chaparrastique) in eastern El Salvador is a symmetrical stratovolcano and one of the most active volcanoes of the country. It rises majestically from near sea level to 2130 m elevation and forms a prominent land mark. The volcano's summit lacks vegetation due to frequent eruptions, but its flanks are largely covered with coffee plantations. San Miguel has a broad, deep crater complex, which has frequently changed morphology during historic eruptions recorded since the early 16th century.

Wow- very cool experience. Thank you so so much to Josue and Danny! This was a hard hike but we were the only ones on the volcano and we were looking for a challenge. Super cool views and awesome having the place to ourselves. I was nervous on the way down (although my boyfriend had so much fun)! So Danny helped me the whole way. The descent is unusual and if you aren’t as afraid of heights as I am, you will love that part too.
If you're looking for a fun, challenging hike look no further. Our tour guide was Josué and he was great! He gave great advice and made the hike a great experience.
The best hike I could think of in el Slavador. I was not familiar with the vulcano at first but it was amazing. The hike was challenging but it was totally worth it. We had a small group so we could go by our own paste. I would totally recommend to everyone who would like to have an amazing view and and fun adventure in el Slavador.
10/10 recommend it! I did this tour Nov 8, 2023 and had the best time. Josue our guide was incredible! So knowledgeable and friendly. Chaparastique is challenging as is and the route is so sketchy /mostly unmarked and despite that Josue seamlessly led us through the hike all the way to the summit and back. It's ~15km and we took 5 hrs 20 mins ish round trip. It was ~3 hr drive (each way) from the city but was SO worth it. Overall very pleased with my experience w/ El Salvador Positive Tours. Francis, David Josue and team are amazing - they gave me recommendations for hotels, other tours and I ended up doing Santa Ana hike which was beautiful too.
This tour group is the best! They’re so communicative and make travel a breeze! The hike was one of the most amazing I’ve experienced! It’s a hike for more advanced hikers as it’s definitely very steep and takes some creative footwork scrambling to the top, but for those with a passion for hiking, it does not disappoint!
Had the pleasure of doing several hikes with these guys and have nothing but praise for their efforts. I went to El Salvador intending to climb as many volcanoes as possible and these guys made planning for these quite easy. Would highly recommend them for pretty much the whole country as they made all of it accessible from my base in San Salvador. Special Thanks to Josue for putting up with my fast pace!
Awesome for expert climbers or if you want to challenge yourself how far you can go. With guides that are very helpful along the way like Francis and Danny your feel like your going up the volcano with friends. It is challenging but it was worth it for the adventure and the beautiful views and once your up there you feel like you conquered the world at least that’s what I felt 😀
