Description
Located in Playa Samara, the paths of the Werner Sauter Biological
Reserve, will lead you to an amazing hiking tour. To discover Samara
trails on a different light, our experienced guide will amaze you with
interesting facts, regarding our biodiversity and its many wonders. Come
join us to visit one of the only private reserves in Guanacaste.
The tropical dry forest is one of the most vulnerable and rare biomes of Central America. In Guanacaste, the characteristic six month dry season leaves the land susceptible to wildfires that often devastate the forest and its wildlife. As if this was not enough, over the past 40 years widespread deforestation and large scale agriculture have reduced the dry forests to a mere fraction of what they were in the past.

Undoubtedly this type of forest houses one of the most interesting and complex ecosystems of the area; the natural scarcity of water has caused wildlife to evolve and thrive in an environment with fewer nutrients than other tropical forests while also maintaining the ability endure six months of intense tropical rain.

An extraordinary hike, a "must" in Samara
It is a "must" in Samara to visit a dry tropical forest. A unique habitat for flora and fauna. We saw several howler monkeys, colorful butterflies (including a malachite), birds, spiders, bats, a giant grasshopper, soldier ants, several types of palm trees, vines, medicinal plants, etc. All this in a two-hour hike on an easily accessible trail. Our guide, with his spotting scope on a tripod, showed us all the diversity of this trail. I recommend this morning excursion.

So worth it!!!
Our guide Alex and driver Rodrigo were both excellent! Alex was very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable as he guided us through the reserve and helped us see some of the animals close up with a magnifier. We got lucky and saw two different species of monkeys! The reserve itself is very peaceful, and the short hike for the views of Sámara was absolutely worth it. Highly recommend this experience!

Great solo woman traveler hike in forest and old mango orchard a couple minutes from Sandra
I loved my early morning hike! My guide Alex was friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable, pointing out a troop of white faced monkeys, howler monkeys, and lots of birds, and talked with me about trees, plants and bugs. He was really patient, I never felt rushed. It's a nice walk with a great view from the to of a bit of a hill. Although he brought binoculars, I'd recommend bringing your own, as well as lots of water and bug spray. And I loved the early morning while it's still (sort of) cool and the animals are active. Great solo woman traveler experience.
