Kingstown is located 1km south of the Thomson Bay Main Jetty and was a focal point in Rottnest Islands WWII operations as it housed the Australian Army during wartime operations. Kingstown Barracks accommodation was opened for educational use in 1984/1985 and has become a much loved camp destination for many WA schools.
Rottnest Island Salt Lakes
Pass by
When on the island, a must do activity is to explore the many salt lakes that occupy approximately 10 per cent of the area. Notable ones include Lake Baghdad, Lake Vincent, Herschel Lake, Garden Lake, Government House Lake and Serpentine Lake. These lakes are permanent and are always accessible all year around, other notable lakes that may dry up throughout the summer period include Pink Lake, Lake Sirius, Lake Negri and the twin Pearse Lakes. These salt lake are known to turn pink as a result of the interaction between the algae and salt that grows in the water. When the right mixture of salt and sunlight interact with the algae a red pigment known as beta carotene is accumulated resulting in the pink tinge to the water.

The tour was ok the guide...
The tour was ok the guide very knowledgeable but the tour didn't go to the West End of Rottnest Island which is the highlight of the Discovery of Rottnest and a must to see. Actually I took the tour for this purpose as I was revisiting the island therefore the next day I had to take another tour to go to the West End. Would not recommend yr tour. Very upsetting.

Have your camera ready. Some interesting chats given. If you can't pedal a bike this is a great way to see the island and get some commentary.

Great way to see the island
Easy and informative coach tour around the island if you don’t want to bike it.
Mick was a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide and it was good to discover the history of the island.
Great photo opportunities and he also pointed out other places that were worth a visit.

First Time Visit
We had a fabulous day on Rottnest. First time visitors. Was a bit overwhelmed by just how many people were there.
Food at bakery and cafe opposite was beautiful. Actually it was nice at the cafe to get a very decent salad that accommodated DF and GF.
We went on the Bayswater Tour. That was amazing. We learnt so much.
Only negative was the unavailability of change rooms and a shower was off stand.

Island with history and beautiful nature
You can see the whole picture of the island with the narration by the driver. It was good to know the history of the island from its discovery to aboriginal prison and military site and then now a popular holiday destination.
On the island there are several beautiful beaches and the bus stops at a few spots where you can take photos

Rotto bus trip
The bus trip was good but it was advertised in dollars ... not until I got my receipt did I know it was US $ . It should be in Aussie dollars for an Aussie based trip... price gouging

Could be better!
I've always enjoyed and taken the Rottnest Island hop-on hop-off bus service. It provides relatively cheap hassle-free transport around the Island and back to the settlement, where one can catch the ferry back to the mainland. However, it is a shame that the prices have increased to $30 per adult, with only a small discount for pensioners and students at $22.
When you consider that, you only end up boarding the bus twice. Because of time constraints, you are not getting the best value for money.
Operator response
Hi petwrite,
Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you've enjoyed the convenience of the bus service. We understand your concerns about pricing and will take them into consideration. We appreciate your support and hope to see you again on Rottnest Island!
Thanks, from the team at Australian Pinnacle Tours
