A Relaxed Day in Rome
We were traveling with our family and wanted to see Rome without feeling like we were being rushed from one attraction to another. This worked really well for us because we had the freedom to decide how we wanted to spend our time. Being collected from Civitavecchia and taken into Rome made the whole day much easier, especially with children.
We started around the Vatican area and then made our way through some of the historic parts of the city. It was nice not having a fixed schedule for every single stop. We could pause for coffee, take photos, look around the shops, and stop for lunch when the kids were ready.
What mattered most to us was getting back to the ship on time. The transportation arrangements were smooth and punctual, so we didn't have that constant worry about missing our departure. It was a long day, but it felt comfortable because we could explore at our own pace. A really enjoyable way for our family to experience Rome during a cruise stop.

Seeing Rome at My Own Pace
As someone who enjoys traveling independently, I really liked the freedom this gave me. Rome has an enormous number of things to see, and I knew it would be impossible to experience everything in one day. Instead of trying to do too much, I picked the places that interested me most and enjoyed them properly.
The transfer from Civitavecchia made getting into the city much simpler. Once in Rome, I was able to walk around, take photographs, explore historic streets, and stop whenever I wanted. I also made time for a relaxed meal and some shopping.
I particularly enjoyed not having to constantly think about transportation between every stop. I could concentrate on the city and make my own decisions throughout the day.
Since I was traveling on a cruise, the return timing was important, and everything was coordinated well enough that I could enjoy the day without unnecessary stress. Rome is overwhelming in the best possible way, and having some freedom made my visit feel much more personal.

A Fun Day With Friends
We were a group of friends on a cruise and decided that we wanted to experience Rome without having every minute planned. That turned out to be a great decision for us. Everyone had a few things they wanted to see, and we were able to combine those interests throughout the day.
We explored some of the major historic areas, spent time near the Vatican, took plenty of photos, and stopped for food along the way. We also found time for shopping, which wasn't originally part of everyone's plan but ended up being one of the fun parts of the day.
The biggest advantage was simply having flexibility. We could slow down when we wanted and move on when we were ready. There was no pressure to stay with a large group or listen to a long explanation at every location.
Getting back to the cruise port on schedule was obviously important, and the return transportation was well coordinated. Overall, it was a relaxed and memorable day with friends, and Rome gave us plenty to talk about afterward.

A Beautiful Day in the Eternal City
We had been looking forward to seeing Rome for a long time, but because we were visiting during a cruise stop, we knew our time would be limited. We wanted to make the most of it without turning the day into a stressful checklist.
The freedom to choose our own pace was exactly what we were looking for. We visited the Vatican area, explored the historic center, enjoyed lunch together, and spent time simply wandering around. Rome has so many beautiful corners that it was nice to occasionally put the sightseeing list aside and just enjoy being there.
We loved having time to stop for photographs and enjoy a coffee without feeling that we had to immediately move on. The transportation arrangements from Civitavecchia were smooth, and the return was timed appropriately for our cruise.
It was one of those travel days where the smaller moments became some of our favorite memories. We saw famous places, but we also had time to enjoy Rome as a city rather than simply as a list of attractions.

More Than Just Checking Off Sights
Our family had visited other European cities on previous cruises, and sometimes shore excursions can feel like you're constantly watching the clock. This experience felt different because we had much more control over our day.
We were able to spend time in the Vatican area, walk through Rome's historic center, stop whenever we wanted, and choose a restaurant that suited everyone. With children and different interests in the family, that flexibility was a huge advantage. Nobody had to hurry through a place simply because the rest of the group was ready to leave.
The transportation was comfortable and the pickup from the cruise port was easy to manage. We also felt reassured knowing that our return to Civitavecchia was planned around the cruise schedule.
Rome itself was the real highlight. The streets, architecture, cafés, fountains, and historic buildings made even the walking between major sights memorable. We came back tired but very happy with how the day turned out.

Not what we expected
This transport basically dropped us and told us to find our own way to the Colosseum due to road closures in Rome. Only option was to join rest of the tour for 40 euros per person. We ended up taking subway to Colosseum but we were too late and were turned away. Lost $320. Had to rebuy tickets … another 108 euros. Just disappointing. Once we did get into the Colosseum we enjoyed the experience but it was a very stressful experience getting there.
Operator response
We regret to hear about your disappointment, but before booking any further activities, we strongly recommend reading and understanding the tour description available on the Viator website at any time.
You booked the self-guided exploration option, which includes nothing else but cruise port pickup and drop-off, and round-trip transfer from Civitavecchia. No Vatican or Colosseum admission, transportation within Rome, assistance, guide services, or anything else is included.
When booking with Viator in the future, we strongly recommend basing your expectations on description and inclusions.
If you are new to Viator, you are welcome to ask for assistance from the Viator Customer Care team, who are at your disposal at any time.
Safe and happy travels.
