Diriyah is a place that deserves to be visited, especially for anyone wishing to better understand the history and identity of modern Saudi Arabia. The restoration and presentation are outstanding. The site is clean, accessible, informative, and visually appealing. Considerable effort has clearly gone into making the historical narrative understandable to visitors. However, I left with mixed feelings. While the reconstruction is impressive, relatively little of the original city has survived. As a result, I sometimes felt I was visiting an interpretation of history rather than history itself. For some visitors this may not matter, but those who seek the atmosphere that comes from authentic, centuries-old fabric may find the experience slightly less moving than expected. An excellent cultural attraction, though I personally found the ratings somewhat generous.
