Guatape , this eastern Antioquia municipality, located an hour and a half from Medellin, opens a world of color among its streets, adorned with baseboards that tell stories of the town and its people. They also call it the interior sea of Antioquia, the Acapulco of Colombia, the interior Cartagena, Paraíso Paisa, Remanso de Paz, the heart of Antioquia's East. It was named in honor of Cacique Guatapé, an inhabitant of this territory in the pre-Hispanic period. Another name he has had is the Ceja de Guatapé. The Rock of Guatapé or Piedra del Peñol, is a monolith 220 meters high located in Guatapé (Antioquia, Colombia). The Stone of El Peñol, composed of quartz, feldspar and mica, was climbed for the first time on July 16, 1954 by an inhabitant of the area, Luis Eduardo Villegas López. in the company of Ramon Diaz and Pedro Nel Ramírez until now the stone still belongs to the Villegas family. You can now access its summit by climbing 740 steps built in the monolith.

I have done this tour before three times but always in a group setting. This time we did a private tour and it was wonderful and gave us more flexibility. By far the best guide that I have ever had on a private tour. Andres is an absolutely amazing, genuinely down to earth, calm, kind and eager to help guide. We really bonded well with him on this trip - he is extremely knowledgeable about history, culture of medellin/guatape/colombia and just so much fun. The 7-8hrs we spent with him flew by in jiffy. When I am back in Medellin I would definitely book other trips where he is the guide. I definitely recommend him.

Some people come into your life with a purpose, and Andres Filipe Giraldo was one of those people. He truly made our Guatapé experience special. From the moment he greeted us, Andres went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable—checking that we had jackets and water, ensuring I had vegetarian options, taking family photos, and sharing local history, culture, and plenty of humor along the way. At El Peñol, he dropped us right at the entrance and made sure we knew where everything was. In Guatapé, when our lunch plans changed because of my dietary restrictions, he quickly arranged an alternative at Kushbu, which was a wonderful plant-based option that I hope tour companies will consider offering to vegetarian and vegan travelers. The petting zoo, El Peñol, Guatapé, and the boat ride were all fantastic, but Andres was the highlight of our day. His warmth, thoughtfulness, humor, and genuine hospitality turned a great tour into a memorable experience. I highly recommend Andres and this tour—you would be lucky to have him as your guide!

Hector was amazing! We had an informative drive to Guatapé. Unfortunately it was raining the whole way there but he used that time to share information about Colombia. He was a wealth of information about the political structure of the country and the history of Colombia. When we arrived at the massive rock, Hector knew everyone from the ticket agent to the parking people. It was a steep but short hike to the top of the rock. Go early to beat the tour busses - it will be worth it. We were up and off the rock before thousands of people arrived. We also were in and out of Guatape before the masses rolled in. It is a such beautiful drive and Hector made it so easy for us! He is so calm, insightful and fun. Ask for Hector - he is the best!
