Malta’s oldest prehistoric site of Għar Dalam engages visitors to step back in time. Rows of ancient animal bones, unearthed from Għar Dalam cave, are exhibited in the Joseph Baldacchino’s Hall, which still retains one of a handful of Victorian style displays in Europe.
The lower part of a colossal statue of a figure wearing a pleated skirt stands sentinel to the dawn of civilisation in the highly decorated South Temple within the Tarxien Neolithic Complex site. Discovered in 1913 by farmer Lorenzo Despott, the site consists of a complex of four megalithic structures built in the late Neolithic and then readapted for use during the Early Bronze Age.
Ħaġar Qim, over 5000 years old, is found at the top of a promontory with a fertile plain to its east and garrigue sloping down to the sea to the west. 500m downhill from Ħaġar Qim one finds Mnajdra, a contemporary building, probably used by the same community given its proximity.

Driver was fine and punctual, booking was easy and the van was clean, but he wasn't a guide. To be fair they did warn us about this, but with hindsight it would have been as easy to just hire a car and do the trips ourselves. Luckily it was just the 2 of us, otherwise I think the pick-ups and drop-offs would have been slow. I don't think it was worth £300 ( entry tickets included), but the sites are amazing and definitely worth visiting
Viator description is misleading— while John was a wonderful guide and driver; kind, knowledgeable and generous with his time & knowledge, it is NOT a port pickup as we’d counted on. Our friends who’d purchased disembarkation pickup from other providers received full service but it turns out the companies with which they booked have permit to enter & pickup guests at the berth. Viator local operator does NOT. We are older and husband has significant difficulties in traversing inclines. The lack of permit meant we had to pull extremely large heavy wheeled baggage up & down a steep ramp causing intense pain that lasted two days, limiting his mobility during the tour and for the following 3 days. So be forewarned: if you’re arriving on a cruise & need port-pickup, don’t book with Viator unless you’re able to safely navigate inclines and walk 5-10 min lugging suitcases.

This is a history tour. Our guide Ray was very knowledgeable and proud of his Maltese heritage. He shared information well beyond what we came to see. We enjoyed our day with him.
For those who want to get to know ruins before Egypt, it is a great option. The only two details are that the guide’s English has a rather unusual accent for non-Maltese people and should be more explicit in the program that lasted half a day, not the whole day.
Ray is excellent. He’s full of knowledge about Malta’s history and has great stories to share. Made for excellent preludes before arriving at our various sites. We really enjoyed all of the temples and the recorded narrated tour was perfect for us.
