Moorish Castle – Sintra Monuments Skirting two Sintra mountain ranges, the Moorish Castle dates back to the early days of the Moorish occupation of the Peninsula - the eighth century. After many attempts, was finally taken by Dom Afonso Henriques first king of Portugal in 1147, and was built the first Christian Chapel of the city, dedicated to St. Peter of Penaferrim. In the romantic period, in 1860, the walls were restored under the supervision of Dom Fernando II, husband of Dona Maria II, who wooded the surrounding areas, and gave a new dignity to the ancient medieval ruins. Margarida exceeded our expectations by miles. She was born and raised in Lisbon and knows it like the back of her hand. She picked us at the airport and took us directly to Sintra. She walked everywhere with us and gave the history and interesting information about everything we saw. She took pictures of us at so many interesting sites. She used to be a professional photographer so the pictures turned out great (no charge). She is a caring and friendly person, and she was always looking out for us. Because of her I highly recommend Viator. If you are booking in Lisbon, ask for Margarida.
We had Francisco as our tour guide. He was super informative and gave us great direction when he would drop us off in Sintra and then again at the Palace. We didn't book to go into the Palace which I'm glad we didn't do as it was very warm and the lines to get into the Pena Palace were insane. We explored the outside of the palace and the gardens which were really cool. We also liked seeing the village of Sintra which was so quaint...almost midevil like. Francisco was very personable and I would definitely recommend asking for him!
Francisco was great! Picked us up at our Airbnb. Really knew the Sintra area well and even gave us plenty of suggestions when we explored the areas on our own before he picked us back up
Don’t do this, your bus in banned from entering Sintra in summer. They swap you to a local bus at the station. Standing room only. Uphill hill with poor driving. Applying brakes harshly on hills with standing veteran passengers! Not good for those over 18 and not Olympian fit. Plain and simple Nickel and diming by the local authorities, forcing all buses out, when can diners and private cars are unibstructed……
Miguel was the most FANTASTIC tour guide. I would definitely recommend him and this tour to anybody visiting Portugal.

Very beautiful day. The Pena Palace is a must-see. We were very well accompanied by Miguël. This reservation allowed us to avoid very long lines. Nothing negative to say.

You can hit all the main attractions in a half day tour of sintra. The tour guide was great and gave us lots of tips and expert background on each location. Make sure to buy tickets to the castles ahead of time to save time and get the best time slots as they sell out fast. Even if you don’t get tickets to enter the castles, they are enjoyable enough from the outside and you still get to see amazing views. Also gave us the inside scoop on the best places to eat while in Portugal. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it.
