Fez Medina Unveiled: Exclusive Private Tour with Local Guide

We are seasoned OS travellers who nearly always get a half-day city tour the day after we arrive in a new city: this one through Viator, is easily in the top three, after over 35 years travelling. Without reservation we give Ahmed not only a 5-Star Rating: if there was a higher 6-Star he would easily get that! Ask specifically for this Moroccan government licensed tour guide: as a child he grew up in the Medina & has many years of local knowledge. You can get cheaper trips but you WILL be missing out on soooo much! We ask you to stay with us in this extended review because everyone needs to know about this honest, professional & highly knowledgeable tour guide. Meeting Ahmed at our Riad was stressless. His big smile & genuine welcome was impressive: we knew this was going to be a very memorable day. The first part was being driven around to the main places of interest with expert commentary: we asked lots of questions which he answered thoughtfully. Highlights included going to a ceramic co-op: interesting: unlike other tour operators at no stage during this visit or others were we ‘pressured’ to buy anything: he stayed with the vehicle, while we looked around. About three-quarters of our time was spent walking: is there anything Ahmed doesn’t know or anyone he doesn’t know: easy answer to both, NO! A lot of time was spent in the Medina and its infinite number of alleyways, etc: often we didn’t see our fellow tourists; we were truly experiencing the authentic view of this fascinating place. There are sooo many highlights, that I could easily write for hours, which we won’t. A few of the standout mentions: Ahmed took us to his favourite lunch place where he generously bought us what he was going to to eat: a simple fresh bread roll filled with all sorts of Moroccan delights including a fried egg: WHAT a taste sensation! He took us to an authentic government approved rug maker: WOW! To see it being made & hearing all the facts! Ahmed took us to his favourite sweets store, patisserie & the best date store in the Medina. Glorious authentic Moroccan food! We found an authentic Hammam spa & went in to look around: seeing Ahmed, the owner welcomed us in with a mint tea & cakes: we took some photos of his services & last night we booked 1hr session for both of us: outstanding (free pick up/drop us back to our Riad). I think by now you have picked up from our words that this was an ‘event’ not just a tour! So let’s sum up: Ahmed is the tour operator everyone should experience: he clearly sets the benchmark for how a private tour should be constructed & executed. We wish him every success: he is definitely in the right job: in his case it is clearly a passion! Our rating is the highest possible to give: there is no negatives at all: just a wonderful, positive, entertaining & informative day out in Fes. Ahmed promptly arrived for pickup in a roomy and comfortable car. His in-depth knowledge of Fes’ rich history was very rewarding. This was our first full day of a week long visit to Fes and we wanted to take advantage early on. He wisely started our walk at the highest point of the Medina so as to make walking downhill easier. Even with that, comfortable shoes and clothes we were completely spend. The copper souks, tannery, narrow streets and schools were the highlights. There were so many other interesting places and people we visited like a hamam, some opulent Mosques, and neighborhood ovens. Like being in your own favorite movie, adventure, time travel to the past all rolled into one. Highly recommended.

We had a very beautiful visit today, rich with all the explanations and comments from Ahmed, our friendly guide full of anecdotes! If you can, take this visit on a Friday, as you will have plenty of time to see all the entrances to the monuments and to move freely through the small alleys. Do not hesitate for a single moment!

We spent two days touring the Fez medina with Ahmed, and we’re glad we did. He’s kind, polite, flexible, and full of fun facts about life in Morocco — everything from how people live in the medina to the realities of work, family, and daily routines. He shared pieces of his own story as well, which made the experience feel more personal and grounded. Ahmed is an excellent navigator of the medina’s complexity. He gave us confidence to explore on our own later, and he answered every question we threw at him — cultural, historical, religious, practical. He never rushed us, and he adjusted the pace and route based on what we were interested in. A few things future travelers should know, not about Ahmed specifically but about how guiding works in Fez: You will be taken into some shops. This is standard practice for all guides in Morocco — there’s a commission system, and it’s part of the ecosystem. If you’re not interested in fabrics, rugs, leather, or lamps, just say so. Ahmed is very respectful when you’re clear about your preferences. If you are interested in buying something, tell him. He can help you negotiate, and you should never accept the first price. Walking out is normal; it’s part of the dance. Remember you’re not obligated to buy anything. Think of it as an educational stop unless you decide otherwise. We did learn a lot about fabrics, rugs, and leather and we appreciated that. If you want a tour focused purely on history, architecture, religion, or photography — say it upfront. Ahmed will tailor the day to you as best he can. What we appreciated most was Ahmed’s openness. He talked about his life, his hopes, his family, and the realities of living in the medina. Those conversations were some of the most memorable parts of our time in Fez. Overall, Ahmed is a thoughtful and knowledgeable guide, and spending two days with him enriched our trip. Go in with a sense of curiosity, be clear about what you want to see (and what you don’t), and you’ll have a great experience. We originally just booked one day with Ahmed but liked him so much we added a second day. Our visit to Fez was really enhanced by the time we spent with Ahmed. Thank you Ahmed!
