Experience the very best of Romania in a single day, combining royal history, medieval legends, breathtaking mountain scenery, and one of the world's greatest driving roads. Visit Curtea de Argeș Monastery, Romania's Royal Necropolis, admired for its remarkable architecture, intricate stone carvings, and the legendary story of Master Manole. Then drive nearly 100 kilometers along the legendary Transfăgărășan, featured by BBC on Top Gear as one of the world's greatest driving roads. Enjoy breathtaking alpine scenery, waterfalls, glacial lakes, and, if you're lucky, spot wild brown bears in their natural habitat. Stop at the foot of Poenari Fortress to take memorable photos and discover the fascinating history and legends of the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler before continuing to Vidraru Dam, Bâlea Lake, and Capra Waterfall.
Our first stop will be at Curtea de Argeș Monastery, one of Romania's most beautiful and historically significant monasteries. Built in the early 16th century by Prince Neagoe Basarab, it is renowned for its remarkable architecture, intricate stone carvings, and the famous Legend of Master Manole. The monastery also serves as the Royal Necropolis of Romania, where several members of the Romanian Royal Family, including King Carol I, Queen Elisabeth of Romania, King Ferdinand I of Romania, Queen Marie of Romania, King Michael I of Romania, and Queen Anne of Romania, are buried. During our visit, you'll have time to admire this architectural masterpiece and learn about its fascinating history and royal heritage.
We will drive nearly 100 kilometers along the Transfăgărășan, Romania's most famous scenic road and one of the world's greatest mountain drives. Featured by BBC on Top Gear in 2009 as one of the world's best driving roads, it is renowned for its dramatic hairpin turns, breathtaking alpine scenery, waterfalls, glacial lakes, and the chance to spot wild brown bears. Built between 1970 and 1974 during the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu as a strategic military route, the road crosses the Făgăraș Mountains and reaches 2,042 meters near Bâlea Lake. Along the way, we'll make several scenic stops for photos. IMPORTANT: The upper section of the Transfăgărășan near Bâlea Lake is open only from June to October. During the rest of the year, it remains closed due to weather conditions.
We will make a stop at the foot of Poenari Fortress, where you'll admire the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler and discover its fascinating history. Originally built in the 13th century and later strengthened by Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century, the fortress served as a strategic stronghold against Ottoman invasions and as a refuge during times of war. During our stop, you'll learn about the fortress's remarkable past and its connection to the legends of Dracula, without entering the fortress. Afterward, we'll continue our journey to the spectacular Vidraru Dam, one of Romania's most impressive engineering achievements.
Vidraru Dam, one of Romania’s most impressive engineering achievements, is located on the Argeș River along the famous Transfăgărășan Road in the Carpathian Mountains. Completed in 1966, the dam was built to generate hydroelectric power and created the spectacular Lake Vidraru, a popular attraction known for its breathtaking mountain scenery. Standing 166 meters high and 305 meters long, Vidraru Dam can hold up to 465 million cubic meters of water, while the lake’s shoreline stretches for approximately 28 kilometers, offering stunning panoramic views and excellent photo opportunities.
Capra Waterfall is one of the most beautiful natural attractions along the famous Transfăgărășan Highway, located in the spectacular Carpathian Mountains of Romania. Surrounded by alpine landscapes and fresh mountain air, the waterfall is known for its crystal-clear waters cascading dramatically over rocky cliffs, creating a perfect setting for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. This scenic stop offers visitors the chance to admire breathtaking mountain views, relax in the peaceful natural surroundings, and capture unforgettable photos while exploring one of Romania’s most iconic road trip destinations.
Bâlea Lake is one of the most spectacular glacier lakes in Romania, located at an altitude of 2,034 meters in the breathtaking Făgăraș Mountains, along the famous Transfăgărășan Highway. Surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery and fresh mountain air, Bâlea Lake is one of the top attractions in the Carpathian Mountains and a favorite destination for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. During the summer season, the lake is accessible by car via the Transfăgărășan Road, offering unforgettable panoramic views and one of the most scenic drives in Europe. In winter, when the high-altitude section of the road is closed, the trip ends at Cabana Capra, where visitors can relax, enjoy a traditional meal, and admire the spectacular mountain landscape. IMPORTANT: Please note that Bâlea Lake is accessible only during the period when the Transfăgărășan Road is fully open, usually from June to October.

Fantastic day trip to the Carpathian Mountains! We spent a full day exploring the mountains with our guide Octavian and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Romania. We visited the Vidraru Dam, drove along part of the famous Transfăgărășan Highway and climbed the 1480 steps to Poienari Fortress, the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler. The views were incredible and Octavian shared a lot of interesting stories about Romanian history and the legends surrounding Vlad. The tour was well organized and the pace was perfect. We had a fantastic day with our private guide, Octavian. Our trip took us to Poenari Castle, and along the way we also visited the dam and a beautiful monastery. The climb of 1,480 steps to the ruins of Poenari Castle is definitely worth it—the ruins themselves and the breathtaking view from the top make the effort more than worthwhile. Octavian is knowledgeable about a wide range of topics and was a great conversation partner throughout the entire day. He is also a very safe driver, and along the way he shared many interesting stories and insights about the country. Thanks to him, we learned so much about Romania and the places we visited during the excursion. Octavian, thank you very much for such an insightful and enjoyable day!

Friendly and informative guide. Car ride to the castle was very pleasant and the castle itself is obviously incredible.
Thank you very much for your kind words! We’re really happy you enjoyed the tour and had a great time. It was a pleasure to have you with us!
I took a private tour with Alex and it was an excellent experience. We started in Curtea de Arges, where he shared interesting stories about the town’s history and landmarks. From there, we continued along the Transfagarasan, and the views were absolutely stunning — far more impressive than I expected. The highlight was Poienari Fortress. The climb isn’t easy, but Alex made it enjoyable, keeping a comfortable pace and explaining the history behind the fortress and Vlad Tepes. Reaching the top and seeing the panoramic view was completely worth it. Alex was professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable. I truly recommend this private tour, especially with him as a guide.
Thank you sincerely for this wonderful review and for the trust you placed in Alex. He is a new colleague in our team — he joined us about two months ago — but he adapted quickly and has already exceeded our expectations through his professionalism and passion for guiding. We are truly happy that he offered you such a memorable experience and helped you discover these spectacular places. Thank you once again for your kind words and recommendation. We warmly invite you to return to Romania whenever you wish, and we will always be here, ready to offer high-quality services and new unforgettable adventures.
I traveled with this company for the first time a year ago, when I visited Peleș Castle and Dracula’s Castle, and the experience was excellent. Returning to the country, I chose to discover the famous Transfăgărășan, and I can say it exceeded all my expectations. The landscapes are absolutely stunning – spectacular hairpin bends, incredible colors, and nature that truly takes your breath away. The path up to Vlad Țepeș’s fortress is a bit challenging, but it’s completely worth it for the splendid panorama waiting for you at the top. I even had the chance to photograph a deer, which made the experience even more special. Everything was wonderful, and I wholeheartedly recommend this trip to all nature and adventure lovers.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for choosing to travel with us once again. It was a real joy to have you with us and to show you the famous Transfăgărășan, a place that reveals its magic only to those willing to explore it. We are honored that the experience we offered lived up to your expectations, and we truly appreciate the trust you placed in us. We look forward to welcoming you on future adventures as well — Romania still has many treasures that we cannot wait to show you!
