Pompeii Herculaneum small group tour from AmalfiCoast

We booked a tour to Pompeii and Herculaneum for 145€, including pickup and a small-group tour. We got a "small group" of 25 people (?), were picked up near our hotel, and driven to Pompeii with a huge detour. The tour there and in Herculaneum was good; in between, we were taken to a cafeteria-style restaurant where there was mediocre food for a high price (5 dishes to choose from, all for 20€ - we had spaghetti with tomato sauce). The return trip was once again a very long detour, and guests were dropped off near their hotels along the way. That was the end of the line in Amalfi, and all guests who had to travel further were thrown off the bus by the Italian-speaking-only driver in a not-very-friendly manner, were left to get a ticket for the public bus on their own, stand in a line for the bus for an eternity, and then travel (mostly standing) to the location of their own hotel. This conclusion greatly detracted from the partially positive experiences of the day. We would not book it again.

We couldn’t believe our luck when we were met by our guide Alexandra for our tour. We had done the same tour in 2011 and have always said that Alexandra was the best guide always so informative, helpful and just a lovely person. Had a great day again, she just cannot do enough to ensure that everyone has a day to remember. Claudio our driver was also amazing navigating his way around some very challenging bends! I'm disappointed to see that a year ago a review recalled the same bad experience we had at the lunch stop so I fail to see the point of writing a review since the operator doesn't take them seriously. I too had Lucia as a guide and she took us to the same underpar restaurant, she's obviously getting a kick back. It was like an episode of Fawlty Towers, the 'head waiter' couldn't seem to get anyone's order right despite there being only 5 items to choose from. Some people waited 45 mins for a salad but the guide, Lucia, did nothing to calm the chaos. Also, a member of the group had a nasty fall at Pompeii but Lucia was so far ahead she didn't even notice.

Terrific day with Lucia and our driver. Very impressed with the booking process and how they suggested an alternate pick up and drop off location closer to our accommodations. We enjoyed the narrative about the towns from Amalfi to Pompeii. Lucia’s tour at Pompeii was very knowledgeable and she was a wonderful story teller. Lucia was well experienced with managing groups and the others at the sites. Our stop between sites gave us a lunch with a variety of options and a cold beverage for only $18 euros per person. A short drive took us to Herculaneum. Lucia continued to share her knowledge and we enjoyed the free time at the end to explore. Wonderful day, highly recommended!

Pompeii and Herculaneum was almost too much for one day. The walking and the heat were very tiring. You must visit both these locations but do them on different days if possible. Our guide was very knowledgeable and English was excellent. There is a lot to see at Pompeii, our guide said it would take at least 4 days to see everything. We were shown all of the main points . Take plenty of water to drink as you will ned it. Good tour.

The tour was easy to book and I was kept informed with reminders. The bus arrived on time, was air conditioned with a very competent, friendly bus driver and guide Lucia. We took the bus from Amalfi to Pompeii. The coastal route was spectacular, and Lucia provided us with historical background on each town. Admission to Pompeii was easy as the tix were purchased ahead of time so we did not queue. The archaeological site was wonderful. Our guide gave us an in depth, clear overview of what life would have been like back then. She was very cognizant of the heat and stopped in shaded areas to give us some respite from the sun. After the 2 gour tour we were taken to the Tiberius restaurant, where we received a good meal ( with choices) and dessert and drink for 18 euros. The price was a concessionary rate through the company. We were then transported to Herculaneum to view the ruins there. Also really informative….however if time was limited, you could just visit Pompeii. Back on the bus, where you could purchase ice cold water for the air conditioned journey back. A memorable day, that was expertly planned and executed by Viator. I would highly recommend.

Alessandra was a fantastic guide. We saw so much yet still have more we’d like to see at Pompeii (it’s huge!) such great value and the stories and histories you hear from the guide make it extra special. Would highly recommend, and it’s so easy leaving from Amalfi, one do the few that do- so definitely boom if you’re staying here or in Maiori!

Sunland picked us up at our hotel near Amalfi. We were a group of about 20 people, and we visited Pompeii. The guide was Alessandra, and she was extraordinary. Although the place was very full, it took us to the best places to meet, provided us with a very good explanation and was a great visit to this ancient city. At the end he suggested a good and accessible restaurant. Alessandra speaks perfect English and made the visit very enjoyable.

This tour was a good way to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum. Lucia was a fantastic guide, very knowledgable and informative. It is quite a lot to visit both sites in one day - we both felt quite tired at the end of the day. However, the journey back was restful and took us via the scenic route along the Amalfi coast.

It was difficult to find a tour with transportation from Praiano, so I am impressed by that. We rode on a standard bus and had to split up into vans/cars on the way there/back. Our guide was not very knowledgeable, outside of the more crude details of Pompeii and Herculaneum. He pointed out several of the fallic symbols, which is all good and fun, but did not tell us much else on our tour.
