Otaru Canal
Pass by
The Otaru Canal is a classic staple when it comes to famous sightseeing spots of Hokkaido. Once the distribution hub of Hokkaido, it boasted a population that even surpassed that of Sapporo. At that time the canal was used to offload ships via barges, and was established to lengthen the distance that goods could be distributed. Eventually the canal was no longer necessary to serve its function once the docks were established and was to be landfilled. However it currently stands as a place for citizens and tourists alike to relax and enjoy with its promenades and gas lamps lighting the riverbanks.
Otaru Art Base
Admission not included60 min
Otaru City's historical buildings of the early 20th century are now used as various resources for tourism. The Otaru Art Base located opposite the Otaru Canal across Rinkosen Street is one such facility. There are four historical buildings where 20 of the largest banks in Hokkaido were gathered, formerly the center of Hokkaido's economy known as "North Wall Street."
What was the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch as seen in the picture is now home to the Nitori Museum of Art, and includes displays such as Japanese and foreign paintings, wood carvings, and more. In the basement you will find the Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass Gallery.
Otaru Sakaimachi Street
Admission not included60 min
If you're travelling for pleasure, then you'll want to enjoy gourmet and shopping. Both can be done at Otaru's Sakaimachi Dori Shopping Street, located on the inland side of Rinkosen Street, parallel to the Otaru Canal. It is a one-way street that stretches about 900 meters from North Wall Street to the Marchen Crossroads where you will find the Bank of Japan Otaru Branch. Both sides of the street are lined with old merchant shops and Western-style buildings. Nearby to the Otaru Canal, it is another very popular tourist spot.
Tanaka Sake Brewing Kikkogura
Admission not included60 min
Otaru may be known for its nostalgic influence of historic Western buildings and glass crafts, but there is also a spot that conveys the history of Japan from long ago. One of these places is the Tanaka Sake Brewery, founded in 1899. Many types of alcoholic beverages are manufactured here, including plum wine, sweet sake, and of course the beloved local sake of Otaru, Takaragawa. Because the cool climate of Otaru allows for the manufacture of sake year-round, the Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkougura is a great place to visit at any time of the year.
Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway Ski Museum
Admission not included60 min
Anyone can enjoy strolling the various beautiful landscapes of historical Otaru. Overlooking this beautiful seaside city and the Sea of Japan is Mt. Tengu, about 15 minutes by car from the Otaru IC. The Mt. Tengu Ropeway can take you from the foot of the mountain to the very top, a total distance of 735 meters, in about 4 minutes.
From the mountain summit you can even get a great view of the Shakotan Peninsula.

Wonderful Day
Wonderful time with with a wonderful guide. A beautiful day in Otura. We saw the highlights and our guide, Hiro, was the perfect host. He had exceptional knowledge and delivered a culturally rich experience to us. Since retirement, we've taken dozens of tours, and this one strands out as a highlight. Great memories. Highly recommended.

Excellent private tour of Otaru with Roy
We had a fantastic day exploring Otaru with Roy. He was an excellent guide: extremely knowledgeable, very flexible, and able to share his expertise on a wide range of subjects, from the history of Otaru to nature and botany, as well as the sake production process.
Roy adapted the itinerary to our interests and wishes throughout the day, which made the experience particularly enjoyable and personal.
We started by taking the cable car up Mt. Tengu, followed by a very pleasant 30-minute walk around the summit. We then visited a local sake brewery, where we learned about the production process and had the opportunity to taste several different types of sake.
Afterwards, we explored Otaru itself, including the lively shopping street, the famous canal, and the historic former financial district. Roy provided interesting explanations and context at every stop, which really helped us understand the history and character of the city.
We were extremely happy with the whole experience and would highly recommend both this tour and Roy as a guide to anyone visiting Otaru.
Operator response
Dear guests,
Many thanks for your kind words. I too enjoyed guiding you in Otaru, not only the touristy shopping streets and photo stop of the Otaru Canal.
It was my first time to guide my guests circling the half-hour nature walking tour on Mt. Tengu. We enjoyed a lot of wild plants and the view from the summit.
Also I wanted you to know the background history of the Otaru Canal which had made the city so unique.
Thank you again for the wonderful review and I really enjoyed your company.

Day trip to Otaru
Our guide Max had planned put the day very thoughtfully taking into account our interests . We enjoyed the day in Otaru with the canal cruise and sakaimachi street being the key highlights . We ended the tour with a quick trip to the last remaining sake factory in otaru . All in all would definitely recommend this day trip with Max

Highly recommended guide for Kyoto
We were very pleased with our 6 hour tour of Kyoto with Yoshi. He spoke very good English and explained well the sites we visited. He took us to a local ramen restaurant for lunch and to a less visited temple not on the tourist radar. He has a very fun personality and he shared stories about his life. He also took good pictures of us. Compared to other guides we had with this company and a different company, we found him superior.

A Pleasant Walk in the Otaru Tourist Area
My impression is that Otaru is a nice, relatively small seaside town that was once a major seaport for Japan. Our guide, Katsuko Kemanai, was an older very nice Japanese lady who seemed fit for her age (about 80 years). The guide's English language skill was moderately good. Her style was not particularly energetic or entertaining and somewhat business-like. We learned a few facts about the region's historical importance in the fishing and business trades. Too often, our guide would ask, "What would you like to do? It's up to you." Maybe we should have arrived better prepared to express our reasons for visiting Otaru. One of our co-travelers specifically wanted to view cherry blossoms and build a music box; we did both.

Thank you very much for your review. It is good to hear that you were able to enjoy your time on the tour. We will speak with the guide about communicating more before the tour, so the day goes smoothly. We hope that you enjoyed Otaru! Japan Guide Agency

Excellent tour of Otaru with Kazuo Sumi!
We had an outstanding private tour in Otaru with Kazuo Sumi, and it was a great experience. Kazuo was an excellent guide, knowledgeable, personable, and clearly passionate about sharing the history and culture of the area. He thoughtfully took us to all the major highlights, including two of Otaru’s most popular museums, and provided great context that really brought each location to life. One of our favorite stops was lunch at the Sankaku Fish Market, fresh, delicious seafood and an authentic local experience we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. We also enjoyed strolling down Sakaimachi Street, where Kazuo gave us time to shop and explore at a relaxed pace. What really made the tour special, though, was his inclusion of a few lesser-known gems, like visits to historic bank buildings that have been preserved as museum sites, it was fascinating and unique. If you’re visiting Otaru and want a well-rounded, personalized experience, we highly recommend Kazuo Sumi. His attention to detail and warm hospitality made for a memorable day. Thank you again Kazuo!

Thank you again,
Kazuo Sumi

Wonderful, memorable tour with expert local guide
My guide Akira was excellent. Informative, understanding, patient, and helpful. He tailored the tour to my interests and let me set the pace. He didn't talk too much; rather, he let me ask questions so that he could speak on topics of interest to me. As a first-time visitor to Japan and Otaru, I could have never figured out the logistics and navigated so efficiently through the city. His English was strong and we conversed easily on subject ranging from history to sports to movies. He also translated my interactions with shop owners. Finally, he accomodated my special request to visit a local coffeehouse. A wonderful, memorable experience!
