A Safe, Informative, and Memorable Journey
I was extremely satisfied with the entire trip and had a wonderful experience from beginning to end.
I would especially like to give a big compliment to Suzanne for her excellent driving skills. Since the journey was quite long, we spent around ten hours in the vehicle that day. The weather was not very good either, and there were some sections of the road where the fog was so heavy that visibility was extremely limited. Despite the challenging road and weather conditions, Suzanne drove very carefully and confidently. We felt very comfortable throughout the journey, and most importantly, she made sure that we were safe at all times.
Suzanne was also a very informative guide. Throughout the trip, she shared a lot of interesting and useful information with us, which made the journey much more enjoyable and meaningful.
Overall, I was truly very happy with this trip and would highly recommend the experience.
At the end of the tour, the company also presented us with a certificate commemorating our crossing of the Arctic Circle. It added a wonderful sense of ceremony to the experience. I even brought the certificate to the Fairbanks Visitor Center and had it officially stamped there. The stamp is only available at the Fairbanks Visitor Center, and it serves as a special reminder that we actually crossed the Arctic Circle. Having that extra stamp made the certificate and the whole experience feel even more meaningful and memorable.

Be one of only a few people that have been north of the Arctic Circle
This was a fantastic trip up a muddy road. Enough stops to be able to be comfortable on the bus. The tour guide was great and informative and the day didn’t really seem that long.

Amazing Bucket-List Experience — But Your Time Has Value Too
THE GOOD: This is an amazing bucket-list experience! Apparently, only a very small percentage of people ever get the opportunity—or are adventurous enough—to make it to the Arctic Circle, and that itself is a great feeling.
The journey continually shows you the vastness, wilderness, and rawness of Alaska. For a first trip up the Dalton Highway, I definitely recommend an experienced tour company—you get history, stories you won't simply find on YouTube, and hidden stops you would otherwise miss.
Our guide, Suzanne, was polite, knowledgeable, sweet, and considerate throughout. She shared lots of stories that kept the long journey interesting.
You are in the wilderness, so don't expect five-star food or restrooms! The tour makes good arrangements, including Yukon Camp and reasonable restroom stops. We are vegetarians and easily found decent food options to fuel us up.
THE BAD: The tour discloses approximately 16 hours. When booking, we scratched our heads because several very similar, if not identical, tours advertise 12–14 hours. Well, we found out why.
First: NO ONE IS SUGGESTING SPEEDING ON THE DALTON HIGHWAY. It is a rough road and speeds absolutely need to adjust to dirt/gravel and conditions.
However, consistently driving 10–20+ mph below the speed limit on well-paved roads, in normal conditions, and even within Fairbanks becomes a driver skill or preference issue—and when you're operating a 16-hour tour, it becomes a guest time-value issue.
Our driver generally stayed around 32–35 mph throughout much of the Dalton, barely reached the low 40s even on paved sections, and would frequently slow down to around 25 mph whenever an oncoming vehicle approached on a 2-way road. Multiple local vehicles, trucks, AND other Arcticel Circle tour vans passed us easily. After hours of observing this, the pattern was unmistakable.
Most telling: we departed 10 minutes early (6:22 a.m.), generally spent LESS than the allocated time at stops, yet returned at 10:55 p.m.—nearly 16.5 hours later.
For us, there is a huge difference between spending extra hours adventuring in Alaska and spending 2–3 additional hours sitting inside a vehicle because of driving preference or skillset.
Suzanne was a great guide, but perhaps the company should consider a separate guide and professional driver, as many tours do. It reduces distraction and allows each role to use the appropriate skillset.
Most importantly, be transparent. If Northern Alaska Tour Company deliberately expects its drivers to operate significantly below posted speeds even under normal conditions, tell guests that upfront and explain that this contributes to the 16-hour duration. If not, then the company should address the inconsistency.
BOTTOM LINE: The Arctic Circle experience itself is fantastic, Suzanne was wonderful, and I am glad we did it. But guests' time has value. Had we known that comparable tours cover essentially the same itinerary in 12–14 hours, and that our additional time would largely be spent inside the vehicle rather than experiencing more of Alaska, it absolutely would have factored into our choice.
We chose this company partly because it had the most reviews. I am sharing this so others can make that choice with information we didn't have.
Operator response
Thank you for taking the time to join us and sharing your experience.
Feel free to call and talk with our operations and guide trainers. We have a very detailed Professional Vehicle Operator Training program - even new coworkers who already have a CDL go thru this program.
We have precious cargo (you/visitors) traveling in a remote region of the state. Anything goes wrong we are hours from help. Was it normal conditions? Without knowing the day you traveled we cannot look this information up.
Yes, other companies do go faster and we will never try to achieve their timing. We would rather be the company who gets our guests home safely versus calling a loved one and explain why we did what we did to try and get them home earlier.
From what you said we achieved what we do share with guests -- it is a full day and we set the expectation that we will be back between 10:30 - 11:30 PM -- even if you add the 10 minutes we left early the timing falls within that time.
Operating for almost 40 years on the highway we take pride in our reputation as a safe operator.
We are glad you enjoyed your time out with us and gain, invite you to call and talk to our operations who train our guides to learn more about what it takes to operate on the Dalton Highway and in Alaska's Arctic.
Thank you

Arctic Circle excursion
Wonderful excursion. Sienna was our guide/driver and did a great job over a long day. Left at 6:30am and returned at 11:30pm. Good stops along the way for food and bathroom breaks. Would recommend, at least once.

Mike M is the best tour guide I have EVER had in my entire life of travels!
The road is extremely bumpy but it's the only way to get where you're going; so sit back and enjoy the scenery. It was everything I expected and more. Mike stopped about every hour to every hour and a half to let us get out, explore and stretch our legs. It didn't seem as long as it was. A once in a lifetime adventure everyone should do once.

Good trip Ezra was an excellent guide, food was ok. Lunch meat sandwich (added cost) dinner Salmon burger with sweet potato fries(added cost) be ready for rough road as dalton highway is gravel. Stopped every couple hours for a break, brought our own snacks and beverages to have while driving. About a 14 hour day round trip. Long ride on dirt road - but worth it!
I’m not going to lie, this is a loooooong drive on a dirt road. However, you get a real feel for Alaska (remote, great distances, no easy way to get there, etc.) To me it was worth it, and we had perfectly timed stops to stretch our legs and grab a bite at the halfway point coming and going.

Awesome tour (bucket list item)
The scenery was amazing. Sabrina from northern Alaska tour was fantastic. She was courteous, personable, and provided a lot of info. Excellent driver - 16 hours on bumpy road with a lot of heavy trucks. Visiting the arctic circle sign was on our bucket list and we met that. It was a great feeling! The food at Yukon river trading post was awesome. Loved their vegan burger. Loved it and recommend it highly.

We are so glad you enjoyed yourself (and for sharing your experience eating at the Yukon River!).
