Definitely worth a visit
Lovely walk up through woods to the hilltop castle. Spectacular location with amazing views. Well- explained info boards in Slovenian and English. Knowledgeable staff at the entrance and a good cafe.

Description
Nowhere in Slovenia there are so many (remains of) castles and manors as there are in the river basin of Savinja. The reasons for that can be found in several facts. Firstly it is important to stress that up to 1140 this was the centre of Savinja margraviate, that a lot of property was gained by the Carinthia Krško bishops and last but not least that a lot of noble families settled in this area. Among them, the most important were certainly the mighty counts and princes of Celje.

The Castles are a reflection of an era, however the people in different periods accepted and perceived them quite differently, just like life is getting new forms all the time. Castles and manors have, with their extraordinary past and present, always teased human imagination. Various stories interwove about the castles, above all about their inhabitants, which were later changed by the people and have been told to their descendants to this day. And due to all those stories and legends about the castles and their inhabitants that were kept by the folk tradition, we can still (magically) relive the past of the mostly castle ruins, that still daringly and proudly stand on the clifs and remind us of their former glory. Thus a lot of stories and legends about the Old Castle Celje, The Lower Castle, the Counts and the Princes of Celje and people from Teharje, were told. The stories and legends edited by Janko Orožen: Castles and Manors according to folk tradition and the documentary film Veronika and Friderik.

A big construction site.
Unfortunately, almost all the interior spaces are closed due to work so we were through the whole "castle" in 20 minutes, in addition the water was cut off and the toilets were therefore not available. The only plus I can think of is that for a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children we only spent €15, otherwise it really would have felt like a rip-off.

Celje Castle
Beautiful castle with a great view, friendly staff. Due to renovation work at the castle, unfortunately, you could not see that much; there was only a small exhibition and it was not very exciting.

Big place for a stroll in Celje history
There is a parking lot in front of the entrance to the castle. It's a fortification at the top of the hill. It is a large medieval castle that used to control traffic in the region of the center of Celje. The foundation of this castle dates back to the 12th century. Open daily from 09 to 17hs. Price is EUR 7.00 per person (student pays EUR 4.00). There is a combined entry option between the castle and the regional museum of Celj for EUR 10.00 per person! The best option is to buy the combined ticket and after visiting the castle, take the car down to the historic center and spend the day there and visit the two large regional museums.

A beautifully located castle with some excellent architectural ( modern) interpretations. Atmospheric & informative. Nice cafe.

The Jewel of Chelsea
The Chateau de Célie is truly impressive! Its history and architecture travel back in time, while the view from the tower is breathtaking. Everything is well preserved and walking through its premises you can feel the atmosphere of the time. Ideal for a short trip.

Very interesting medieval castle
Well preserved medieval castle. Very interesting visit and spectacular views from the viewpoint and the tower. You can see all of Celje and its surroundings. It is worth the visit and the 7 euros it costs to enter.

beautifully preserved castle
Beautifully preserved castle on top of a mountain. Very nice views. On some days there are activities in the castle, but this was not during our visit.
